NEW YORK, N.Y. – Behind a career-high 21 points from sophomore
Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.), the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team knocked off nationally ranked New York University, 58-52, on Monday night in Manhattan.
In addition to snapping NYU's 48-game, regular-season winning streak against non-conference opponents, the Blue Knights earned another victory against a ranked opponent. The Violets were ranked 19th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 and 22nd in the USA Today ESPN Division III Coaches Poll.
Leading 13-12 with 10:46 remaining in the first half, the Blue Knights did not score again before the half time buzzer. The Violets would fare just a little better offensively, scoring nine points during the stretch to take a 21-13 advantage into the break. Mount Saint Mary missed twelve consecutive shots and turned the ball over seven times during the scoreless drought.
Freshman
Kate Hartnett (Floral Park, N.Y.) finally broke through with a layup at the 18:36 mark to make the score 24-15. The Blue Knights gradually clawed their way back into the game and a three-pointer by senior
Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, N.J.) at the 15:54 mark brought them to within five (28-23).
The Violets would pull away slightly in the next few minutes and led 36-27 with 12:44 to play. From there, the Blue Knights caught fire. A pair of free throws by Garbie cut the deficit to seven. Then, sophomore
Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) knocked down a triple to make it four. NYU senior Hailey Kimball (North Berwick, Maine) answered with a three-pointer, but Garbie responded with back-to-back threes to make it a one point game.
Senior
Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) would give the Blue Knights their first lead of the second half (42-41) with a layup at the 7:24 mark. Then, trailing 43-42, Mount Saint Mary scored the next seven points and led 49-43 with a little more than four minutes to go.
Still, NYU would not go away. Junior Emily Foshag (Los Angeles, Calif.) cut the deficit to four with a layup at 1:57 and after a missed layup by the Blue Knights, sophomore Erica Franke (Cincinnati, Ohio) nailed a three-pointer to make it a one point game (51-50) with 1:21 to play.
With the clock ticking under a minute, it was Garbie's time to shine once again. Taking a pass from Zrowka with the shot clock running down, the sophomore drilled a three-pointer to give the Blue Knights a four-point cushion (54-50). NYU cut it to two with a pair of free throws, but Garbie answered again, extending the lead back to four with just sixteen seconds to play. An NYU turnover sealed the deal and Zrowka made a pair of free throws to make the final score, 58-52.
Garbie finished with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor. Horvers pitched in with 13 points and Zrowka added ten points to go along with 5 assists.
For the Violets, Kimball was the only player in double figures and finished with 13 points.
Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Wednesday as they'll host SUNY New Paltz in the Kaplan Center. The game is slated for 6:00 p.m.
