NEWBURGH, NY - The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Kaplan Center. The Blue Knights lost in straight sets to Vassar College (25-17, 25-21, 25-17) before defeating Bard College in straight sets (25-16, 25-9, 26-24).
In the opening match, the Blue Knights were led by sophomore
Teresa Sorrentino (Bellerose, N.Y.) who totaled 9 kills and an ace. Junior
Elizabeth Douress (Rahway, N.J.) also added 6 kills and 2 digs, while senior
Katie Toole (Wallkill, N.Y.) contributed 22 assists. On the defensive side, sophomore
Heather Schaeffer (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) pitched in with 13 digs.
Against Bard, freshman
Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) tied a school record with 13 service aces. At one point during the second set, Halverson served 20 consecutive points, leading the Blue Knights to a 20-1 advantage. The freshman also contributed 13 digs.
Freshman
Mary Ann Raftery (Long Beach, N.Y.) was perfect on the attack, tallying 10 kills without an error on 19 attempts. She also had 7 digs. Schaeffer led the Mount once again with 13 digs.
Mount Saint Mary played in black and pink uniforms during the matches to show their support for Dig Pink. All proceeds from t-shirt sales and concessions will be donated to the Sideout Foundation.
Up next for the Mount is a non-conference match with Medgar Evers College. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on October 21 in Brooklyn.
