NEWBURGH, NY – Five players reached double figures on Saturday as the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team used a strong first half to coast to a 70-55 victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline Conference action. The Blue Knights won their tenth consecutive game to improve to 14-4 overall and to remain unbeaten in the conference at 11-0. The Dolphins dropped to 10-9 overall, 9-3 conference.
In the first half alone, the Blue Knights forced 16 turnovers and limited the Dolphins to just 6-of-29 shooting from the floor (20.7-percent). Mount Saint Mary gradually pulled away with solid play at the offensive end, shooting 14-of-28 from the field and with eleven of the fourteen baskets being credited with an assist. Catie Biordi (Beacon, N.Y.) nailed a three-pointer that sparked a 12-1 run. Junior
Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, N.J.) capped the run with another triple to make the score 36-17 with 1:33 remaining.
After junior
Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) pushed the lead to twenty in the opening minutes of the second half, the Dolphins made a nice run to get back into the game. Mount Saint Vincent outscored the Mount, 17-4, over the next four minutes and cut the deficit to just seven (44-37) at the 14:24 mark. The Blue Knights responded with a 7-0 run, however, and would never allow the Dolphins to threaten again. The Mount led by double-digits for the rest of the way.
Biordi and Zrowka tied for a team-high with 14 points each. Biordi shot 4-of-7 from three-point land while Zrowka also tallied 7 steals and 6 assists. Junior
Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) had 13 points while Sangster and freshman
Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) each finished with 12.
Freshman Jen Mocanu (Middletown, N.J.) led Mount Saint Vincent with 14 points. Junior Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) totaled 8 points and 12 rebounds but was limited to just 1-of-9 shooting from the floor.
Mount Saint Mary looks to extend their winning streak on Wednesday, February 4 as they host the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. The tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
