NEWBURGH, NY – A fifteen minute delay did not rattle the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team as the Blue Knights put on a show for the Kaplan Center faithful. They easily defeated Yeshiva University, 83-28, Thursday night in the second of four straight home games.
The Blue Knights opened the contest by scoring 19 straight points before Yeshiva managed their first point from the free throw line with twelve minutes to go in the opening stanza. The Macs scored their first field goal of the game when Renee Ashkenazi drained a basket in the paint at the 9:29 mark. Mount Saint Mary College would lead at the half, 40-13, marking the second straight game that the Mount has held its opponent to 15 or fewer points in the first half. Junior
Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) led all scorers with 10 first half points. Meanwhile, Yeshiva shot a woeful 15.7-percent for the opening 20 minutes.
The second half would be pretty much the same as the hosts scored seventeen straight points to build a forty-four point advantage. The Mount would lead by as many as 55 points in the game. A record was broken in the second half when junior
Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, NJ) recorded her 13th assist of the game. The previous record was held by Debbie Rinaldi who had 12 assists in a contest eleven years earlier. The Blue Knights would shoot 44.9-percent for the game, while the visitors shot only 18.9-percent.
The Blue Knights were led by Paggi who finished with 17 points. Junior
Gianna Cesa (Hillsdale, N.J.) finished with 10, and her teammate, freshman
Paige Sparks (Hamden, Conn.), had 10 as well. Meanwhile, Yeshiva was led by Shir Fuchs with 10 points. Easily, the highlight of the night was Zrowka setting a new school record with 13 assists.
Mount Saint Mary won its seventh straight contest to improve to 11-4 and 8-0 in the Skyline Conference. Yeshiva's troubles continued, as they dropped to 1-11 overall and to 0-9 in league play.
The Mount Saint Mary Blue Knights continue their season long four game homestand Saturday afternoon, January 24th, with another conference game, this time against Purchase College. Earlier in the month, the Mount defeated Purchase 81-52 on the road and will go for the season sweep. On Saturday, all freshmen that were given a Blue Knights t-shirt should wear it to the doubleheader so they can participate in the halftime entertainment. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m., and the men's game will take place at 3:00 p.m. as part of a doubleheader.
