NEWBURGH, NY – While limiting Bard College to just 21-percent shooting from the field, the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team earned their sixth straight win with a 78-31 victory, improving to 10-4 overall and to 7-0 in the Skyline Conference. The Raptors dropped to 3-11 overall and to 1-7 against conference opponents.
The Blue Knights opened the game on a 14-1 run and didn't allow the Raptors a field goal until the 10:55 mark of the first half. Junior
Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) closed the half with a layup that gave the Mount a 32-12 advantage at the break. Tice finished with 7 points and 7 rebounds in the opening twenty minutes.
Mount Saint Mary came out of the gates in the second half with a 25-2 run and led 57-14 with 13:07 to play in the contest. The Blue Knights went 9-for-10 during the run and connected on all four of their attempts from three-point range. Freshman
Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) hit back-to-back triples near the fifteen mark and juniors
Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and
Catie Biordi (Beacon, N.Y.) also connected from long range. Mount Saint Mary led by as many as fifty-seven later in the half before settling in for the 78-31 final margin.
Horvers led the way for the Blue Knights, finishing with a career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Paggi was the only other player in double figures with 14. Tice filled out the score sheet nicely, collecting 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Freshmen
Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.) and
Paige Sparks (Hamden, Conn.) each had a career-high 8 points. Garbie also totaled 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
Sophomore Blaire Moldenhauer (Albany, Mo.) had a team-high 12 points for the Raptors. Bard shot just 9-for-43 from the field in the game and was out-rebounded, 49-24.
Mount Saint Mary will take on Yeshiva University on Thursday, January 22, in the second of five consecutive home games for the Blue Knights. The tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. as part of a double-header with the men's game.
