NEWBURGH, NY – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team opened the game on a 16-2 run and eased to a 74-47 victory over St. Joseph's College in Skyline Conference action on Wednesday night. It was the fourth win in a row for the Blue Knights who improved to 8-4 overall and to 5-0 in the conference. The Golden Eagles dropped to 2-12 overall and to 2-5 in the Skyline.
Twelve different players recorded points for the Blue Knights, led by a game-high 22 points from junior
Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) Paggi shot 9-for-12 from the field and also collected 5 rebounds. Freshman
Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) also had a hot shooting night, connecting on three of four attempts from behind the arc to finish with 13 points. Junior
Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) tallied 11 points and 6 boards for the Mount.
St. Joseph's junior Carissa Pirotta (Northport, N.Y.) led the Golden Eagles with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Junior Trish McMahon (Patchogue, N.Y.) also had 13 points to go along with 5 rebounds.
After shooting 64-percent in the first half (16-for-25), the Blue Knights led 38-16 at the intermission. St. Joseph's shot just 5-for-22 from the field in the first half and missed their first eleven shots of the game. The Golden Eagles didn't connect on a field goal until the 8:53 mark.
Mount Saint Mary shot 52-percent in the second half to finish at 58-percent for the evening. The Golden Eagles played and shot much better in the second half, connecting on 10-of-24 attempts from the field (42-percent). The Mount outscored St. Joseph's, 36-31, in the final twenty minutes.
The Blue Knights hit the road this weekend for their next scheduled contest. They will take on Old Westbury on Saturday, January 17 beginning at 2:00 p.m.
