NEW HAVEN, CT – With just two minutes and sixteen seconds to go in the second period of overtime, Albertus Magnus freshman Jamal Howard (West Haven, Conn.) scored the game winning goal to propel the Falcons to a 1-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in the opening game for both teams.
After a diving save by Mount Saint Mary junior Paul Aries (Nashua, N.H.), Albertus Magnus freshman Mike DaSilva (Stratford, Conn.) corralled the rebound and passed to Howard who found the back of the net for the game-winner. The shot was just the second one on goal in the overtime periods for either team.
Albertus Magnus outshot the Blue Knights 23-9 and it was the goalkeeper Aries who kept Mount Saint Mary alive. Aries finished with eight saves, several of them spectacular, as he kept the game scoreless deep into the second overtime.
Up next for the Blue Knights is their home opener. Mount Saint Mary will host Hunter College on Wednesday, September 3 starting at 4:00 p.m. The women's game will follow at 7:00 p.m. as part of a Kaplan Field double-header.
