Newburgh, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College junior
Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored a game-high 17 points in just 13 minutes of playing time Thursday night as the Blue Knights coasted to a 70-32 Skyline Conference victory over Polytechnic University. The win pushed the Mount to 20-2 overall and marked the seventh season in row that the team has won twenty games. Their 14-1 Skyline record keeps them tied with Farmingdale, winners tonight over Bard, for the top spot in the conference. Polytechnic dropped to 7-15 overall and 4-12 inside the conference.
As they have done so many times this season, Mount Saint Mary jumped on their opponent early, racking up twenty of the first twenty-two points scored in the game. The Blue Knights pushed the lead to as many as twenty-seven before the score settled to 38-13 at half time.
The second half was more of the same, as MSMC gradually increased their lead to forty-one points. Sophomore Kaitlyn Maglione (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) banked home a lay-up with 3:29 remaining to make the score 68-27. Polytechnic's Consuela Aranda (Calexico, Calif.) scored five of the game's last seven points to make the final score 70-32.
Paggi made her first eight shots before missing on her final attempt of the contest. She connected on her only three-point attempt to finish with 17 points. Sophomore Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) was the only other Blue Knight in double figures, connecting on 6-of-11 attempts for 12 points. Senior Megan Kimmey (Troy, N.Y.) recorded a game-high 7 assists and filled out the rest of her line with 4 points, 4 rebounds, a steal, and a blocked shot.
Senior Jackie Calandriello (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Blue Jays with 9 points and also finished with 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Senior Kristen Partch (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 7 points and 10 boards for Polytechnic.
The Blue Knights shot 45-percent from the field and turned the ball over just four times. Polytechnic connected at just 29-percent and had 17 turnovers.
Up next for Mount Saint Mary is the Skyline Conference showdown with Farmingdale State College, a game that will almost certainly decide the regular season champion and the top seed in the conference tournament. The Rams hit a lay-up at the buzzer to defeat the Mount earlier this season and the rematch will take place on Saturday, February 16 beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Kaplan Center.
