Fast Start Helps MSMC to Win Over St. Joseph’s

Patchogue, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College senior Vanessa Lawson (Kingston, N.Y.) scored 13 points to lead the Blue Knights past St. Joseph's College, 67-37, in Skyline Conference women's basketball action Thursday night. The win was the second in a row for the Mount since the road loss to Farmingdale and they moved to 15-2 overall (9-1 Skyline). St. Joseph's fell to 7-9 overall but remain tied for fourth in the conference with a 5-4 record.

Lawson combined with junior Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) to score the first eight points of the game, Lawson with two jumpers and Paggi with a jumper and a pair of free throws. After the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 10-4, the Blue Knights answered with a 14-0 run that made the score 24-4 only eight minutes into the game. Lawson and Paggi combined for eight more points during the run, again finding two buckets apiece.

St. Joseph's cut the lead back to twelve with a nice 12-4 run over the next eight minutes, but that would be as close they would get. The Blue Knights carried a 35-18 advantage into the intermission and never led by less than the seventeen-point margin for the entire second half. MSMC pushed the lead to as many as thirty-six (64-28) before the game settled to the final score.

Lawson shot 6-for-8 from the floor and picked up 6 rebounds to go along with her team-high 13 points. Paggi finished with 12 points and 6 steals. Senior Jackie Markert (Voorheesville, N.Y.) just missed a double-double, concluding the game with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Sophomore Trish McMahon (North Patchogue, N.Y.) was the lone bright spot for the Golden Eagles, who shot just 26.3-percent from the field. McMahon shot 4-for-9 from the field and was 5-for-9 at the line for 13 points. She also had a team-high 8 rebounds.

Despite the final margin of victory, MSMC did experience their fair share of troubles during the game. The Blue Knights shot 45.6-percent from the field, but were only 1-for-10 from three-point land. They also committed 24 turnovers, their third highest total to date in the 2007-08 campaign.

Mount Saint Mary will take on Old Westbury this weekend as they continue their Skyline Conference schedule. The Blue Knights will tip with the Panthers on Saturday, January 26 beginning at 2:00 p.m. as part of a double-header in Old Westbury, N.Y. The men's game will follow at 4:00 p.m.
