Farmingdale, N.Y. - Once was not enough for Farmingdale senior forward
Jasmine Sistrunk (Brooklyn, N.Y.). After hitting the game-winning shot in Farmingdale's 67-66 defeat of Mount Saint Mary College last season, Sistrunk repeated the feat Saturday afternoon, making a buzzer-beating lay-up to give Farmingdale a 70-68 victory. The Rams took over sole possession of first place in the Skyline Conference, pushing their unbeaten conference record to 9-0 and their overall record to 11-3. The Blue Knights fell to 13-2 overall and 7-1 inside the Skyline.
Trailing 68-66 with forty-one seconds to play, Mount Saint Mary called a time-out to set up what would be their last possession. After the time-out, sophomore Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) hit a jumper on a feed from senior Vanessa Lawson (Kingston, N.Y.) to tie the score at 68. Without calling a time-out, Farmingdale brought the ball down the floor to take the last shot. With time winding down to the final three seconds, sophomore Kamaya Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) found Sistrunk underneath the hoop for the game-winner just as the clock hit all zeroes.
The Blue Knights led 34-30 at the half, but Farmingdale opened the second period on a 5-0 run to take a one point lead. The rest of the half was closely contested to the end, with neither team leading by more than five points.
Farmingdale sophomore Kimberly Blakney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all scorers with 29 points and finished with a game-high 7 steals. Miller completed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Sistrunk had 4 points and 8 rebounds in addition to her game-winner.
Mount Saint Mary, playing without injured senior point guard Chantel Anthony (Middletown, N.Y.), was led by 19 points from Sangster. The sophomore was 7-for-10 from the field and also had 5 rebounds. Lawson had 12 points and junior Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) went for 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.
With three consecutive road games behind them, the Mount returns to the Kaplan Center for their next contest on Monday, January 21. They will take on Russell Sage beginning at 7:00 p.m. Farmingdale has a week off before hosting the College of Mount Saint Vincent on January 26 at 1:00 p.m.
