King Hits Walk Off in Extras as Softball Splits Doubleheader

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Mount Saint Mary College softball team split its doubleheader with a walk-off in the 8th inning from Olivia King against St. Scholastica.

The Basics

Rapid Recap
Mount Saint Mary took on St. Scholastica in game one to open up day three of their doubleheader. The Saints would score a run in the top of the 1st to get on the board first and take a 1-0 lead. This game was a defensive battle, with Grace MacDonald on the mound for the Mount, throwing a complete, scoreless game with 5 strikeouts. The Knights got on the board in the bottom of the 4th, with a leadoff single from Allie Kenney. Brianna Marie Duffy would come in as a pinch runner, stealing second, then scoring off an RBI single from Autumn Strobach to tie the game 1-1. 

St. Scholastica would score in the top of the 6th with an RBI double to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, the Knights needed at least 1 run to extend the game. Dana Donnelly singled, then with 2 outs, Grace MacDonald hit a clutch double to score pinch runner Angela Christopher from first to tie the game 2-2 and force extra innings. In the top of the 8th, Grace Terpening threw out a runner at home to put the Knights in a great position in the bottom half of the inning. With 2 out in the bottom of the 8th, Olivia King hit a hard ground ball to third to score Terpening and walk it off for a 3-2 win over St. Scholastica.

Rapid Recap
The Knights played Gordon College in their second game of the day, scoring a run in the top of the 1st, with an RBI single from Grace MacDonald to score Chloe Graham. Graham reached base on 1 of her 3 doubles on the day. Things started to go south in the bottom half of the inning, as the Fighting Scots scored 5 runs on just 3 hits. This high-scoring affair continued into the second inning thanks to a 2 RBI double from Graham and a 2 RBI single from Grace Terpening to tie the game up 5-5. Gordon scored a run in every inning but 1, as they took the lead back 6-5. In the bottom half of the 3rd, they would score another 2 runs to extend their lead. 

The Knights came out in the next half inning with 3 runs to tie the game back up 8-8. Grace MacDonald and Grace Terpening both recorded RBI hits as they and Chloe Graham combined for 9 RBIs this game. A couple of RBI hits gave the Fighting Scots 3 runs of their own as they took the lead once again. A big 5-run inning in the top of the 5th for Mount Saint Mary gave them their first lead since the first inning. This lead would be short-lived, as 4 runs from Gordon in the bottom half of the inning put them up 15-13. A pitching change for the Fighting Scots settled their defense down for the rest of the game, not allowing the Knights to score as Gordon won this high-scoring battle 15-13.
