Rapid Recap
The Knights played their seventh straight road game Monday evening against Saint Elizabeth University in hopes of getting back in the win column. Mount Saint Mary wasn't able to get anything going early offensively as they relied on mistakes from the Eagles to gain their first six points, trailing 10-6. A couple
Jonaiya Williams kills sparked a 6-1 run from the Knights to pull ahead 12-11. They continued to score in spurts as
Ava DiScala provided some offense of her own to help the Mount extend their lead to 18-14. The Knights played textbook volleyball as a 6-1 run capped off by a
Sofia Fredericks ace secured the first set for them to go up 1-0 in the match.
The Mount was shot out of a canon to start the second set, quickly taking a 9-4 lead.
Jonaiya Williams had three kills in this run, as
Julianna Simone,
Sofia Fredericks, and
Aubriana Boyce took turns passing out assists. Saint Elizabeth responded to the call taking a 14-13 lead midway through the set. Both teams exchanged points until the eagles capitalized with 5-1 run to take a 23-19 lead. The Knights were on the edge, but pushed back, scoring six unanswered points and winning the second set.
Erin Lema had an insane backwards kill that gave the Mount a 24-23 cushion, and
Sofia Fredericks finished off the Eagles with yet another service ace to close out the set.
The Knights had a chance to get their first clean sweep of the year, but they would have to overcome a 10-4 deficit in the third set. Mount Saint Mary fought back into the set with kills from
Jonaiya Williams,
Julianna Simone, and
Sofia Fredericks to take the lead 12-11. Saint Elizabeth would not go down without a fight, as they outscored the Knights by four to take an 18-15 lead late in the set. Just like they had all night, the Mount answered with a 6-1 run that included one of eight kills on the match for
Brooke Lavelle. The Eagles turned the tables, going up 24-21 with a chance at set point. Mount Saint Mary brought their game up another level, closing out Saint Elizabeth with a magical 6-1 run, forcing a win-by-two scenario where
