Knights Sweep and MacDonald Dazzles In No Hitter

Newburgh, NY- The Mount Saint Mary College (MSMC) softball team opened their Skyline Conference season with a dominant doubleheader sweep over Yeshiva University on a brisk Friday afternoon. The Knights (2-0) took game one by a score of 16-1 before Grace MacDonald shut down the Maccabees (0-2) completely in game two, tossing a no-hitter in a 13-0 victory.

"Nice wins today," said Head Coach Samantha Howe. "I am proud of my whole team. Each player got involved and helped put two in the win column."

Game One: MSMC 16, Yeshiva 1

A rocky start to the first inning saw the Knights give up an early run to the Maccabees, but quickly answered back when the Mount got on the board, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. MSMC extended their lead to 14-0 in the second inning when the Knights batted around the order as almost every batter in the inning recorded at least one hit. The Knights put the game away in the third when they added the icing to the cake with two more runs.

Sofia Gannon led the offensive attack for MSMC, going 3-for-3 with a double, a RBI, a BB, and three runs batted in. Dana Donnelly had herself a day, batting 2-3 with 1 RBI, 1 Run, and pitched 4.1 innings in Relief, striking out 8 batters and giving up 0 hits.

Game Two: MSMC 13, Yeshiva 0

Grace MacDonald stole the show in game two, tossing a complete-game no-hitter to lead the Knights to a 13-0 victory. MacDonald was dominant, striking out 9 batters while facing just 16 hitters. The sophomore righty cruised through the game, allowing only one Yeshiva baserunner to reach scoring position.

Offensively, MSMC got things going in the bottom of the first inning with a double up the middle by Kristen Tellier scoring Olivia Ferara.  Chloe Graham then got on base with a single, and Sophia Reed stepped up and hit a BOMB over the left field fence that scored three more runs.  The Knights offense did heavy damage in the first inning scoring 9 runs on 11 hits.  They went on to add three more runs in the second and 1 additional run to set the final score, 13-0.

Kristen Tellier lead the Mount offense going 3-4 with 2 runs, 1 double, 3 RBI.  Grace Terpening was 3-3, with 3 RBI and 2 runs, and Grace MacDonald was 2-3 with 1 run.  Six batters had a multi-hit game, and ten of the fourteen batters scored at least one run.

Looking Ahead

The Mount will return to action on Thursday, March 28th, when they travel to Ramapo College for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
