Rapid Recap
Mount Saint Mary headed on the road to take on Old Westbury College as the Knights look to snag the last spot in the Skyline Conference Playoff. A win today and Thursday would guarantee the Mount a spot as the 6th seed.
Julianna Simone and the Knights started off well with a kill and an ace to put them up 4-1. The Panthers would hang in there, as they wouldn't let their record define their play on the court today. Mount Saint Mary found themselves down 16-13 midway through the set, but middle blocker
Brooke Lavelle would not let this one slip away as two kills from her and a mistake from Old Westbury tied things up 16-16. Lavelle is having a breakout Junior campaign, with her 84.0 kills leading the Skyline and has her ranked top 40 in the nation. A 7-1 run had the Knights in an all-too-familiar place as they led 23-19. They would not squander away this lead as they won the first set 25-21.
Set number two was another close one, as each team traded points and leads. It wasn't until a
Jonaiya Williams kill that the Knights would get into a rhythm. They scored 11 of the next 14 points and found themselves up 19-11. With a comfortable lead, the Mount kind of let their foot off the gas allowing Old Westbury to creep back into the set. The Panthers went on two separate 6-1 runs that put them in place to steal the second set. Up 24-23,
Jonaiya Williams stepped up for the Knights and sealed the deal with a kill to win the set 25-23.
After starting the set tied 5-5, Mount Saint Mary scored seven of the next eight to take a 12-6 lead that included kills from
Sofia Fredericks and
Julianna Simone. Old Westbury continued to battle as they brought their deficit to within two points. The Knights began to heat back up towards the end of the set as
Erin Lema had one of her team-high three aces on the night to put the team at match point. A Panthers attacking error won the set 25-18 and the match for Mount Saint Mary 3-0. The Knights travel to Throggs Neck, New York to play their final match of the regular season against Maritime this Thursday. A win for them or a loss for St. Joseph's Brooklyn cements their spot as the 6th seed in the Skyline Conference Playoffs.
