Rapid Recap
An emotional game for Mount Saint Mary as
Odirlei Thomaz and
Caesar Martinez laced up their cleats for the final time as Knights. The two seniors have been major contributors during their careers here at the Mount and were able to go out with one last win. The Knights continued where they left off in their game against Sarah Lawrence.
Liam Hughes was just inches away from a goal a couple of minutes into the match as his strike missed just right. Mount Saint Mary controlled the pace for the majority of the half, but Old Westbury got the one chance they needed and scored in the 33rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Only 29 seconds later,
Jeremy Burgos responded with a goal of his own to make the game 1-1.
Marco Mazzarelli caught the Panthers' defense sleeping and picked the defense's pocket clean to net the second goal for the Knights as they took a 2-1 lead entering the half.
It would only take the Mount 34 seconds into the second half to score as the dynamic duo of
Quinn Tynan and
Marco Mazzarelli found each other to extend their lead. The game was not over yet as the Panthers were able to cut the deficit to one in the 50th minute. Moments later,
Ryan Kieser had a beautiful strike from outside the top of the box that was just saved by the Old Westbury keeper as he deflected the ball over the net. In the 74th minute, the Knights found success on a corner kick from
J.C. Gutierrez. His cross found the foot of
Jeremy Burgos who sent it towards the net where
Quinn Tynan was waiting as he buried the point-blank shot to put the Mount back up two. Ever since checking into the game,
Ryan Alvarado provided great energy and it was almost inevitable that he would make a play.
Odirlei Thomaz sent a long ball from his spot in the back of the defense all the way to Alvarado who faked out the defense for the score. Mount Saint Mary continued to create chances as the Red Rocket
Sean Watson nearly scored his first goal of the season off a header. The Knights would end up defeating the Panthers by a score of 5-2.
