Throggs Neck, NY- The Mount was on the road tonight and took on conference opponents, Maritime College Privateers. It was a beautiful night on the water, and the Knights entered the game on a mission. Coach Chris Lyn and his team were locked in on getting their conference record back on track, so as soon as they heard the first whistle it was game on!
The offense of the Mount was unrelenting on the Privateers defensive third. Over the full 90 minutes the Knights took 22 shots and only allowed 2 shots on their own goal. The first half ended deadlocked at zero, with the mount unable to find the back of the net.
The second half began and sophomore
Kaitlin Hansen got the Knights on the board only four minutes after the kick. After the game Kaitlin described the moment, "I saw Maria (Baldwin) running down the side, and put a cross through the front of the goal. The goalie got her hands to it but I had timed my run well and psyched myself up as I was swinging at the ball… don't miss you've got this, and was able to tuck it in the left side." Both teams knew that a one goal lead was tough to hold and the physicality of the play increased. It wasn't until the 89th minute that junior
Darla Petricca sealed the win by taking a cross from
Raina Quinones and finished it. After the match Darla described the moment while doing a little dance, "It was so exciting to be in that moment, I had taken a few hard hits during the game and to be able put that out of my head and get my first goal and help my team was awesome!"
With her defense playing strong,
Christina Kakavas earned her first shut out of the season with two saves.
"I am so proud of the team tonight, we battled hard and made sure we kept the pressure up the full 90 minutes. The team understood the plan and executed tonight, I was pleased to see the team take what we have been working on and going out and put it into action. We want to keep the momentum going as we prepare for our next game," Coach Lyn said post-match.
The Women will be on the road Saturday, traveling down to Long Island to take on St. Joseph's University-Long Island.
