Baseball Falls Twice On Senior Day

Knights honor six seniors prior to first pitch

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team closed out the 2023 season on Sunday afternoon, falling twice to the visiting United States Merchant Marine Academy by scores of 10-5 and 12-0. Senior Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.) totaled three hits for the Mount over the two contests.
 
Sunday's results finish off the Mount's season at 13-27 overall and 8-12 in conference play, while USMMA earns the fifth seed in next week's Skyline Conference Championship with a 24-14 overall record and a 12-8 mark in league play.
 
Game 1: USMMA 10 – Mount Saint Mary 5
How It Happened
  • After Jared Chambers put the visitors on top 1-0 with a run scoring single in the top of the first, the Knights came back with three tallies in the home second to move in front 3-1.
  • Coleman Barnes (New Hampton, N.Y.) scored the first run on a misplayed sacrifice bunt with Nolasco giving the Knights to the two-run advantage with a two-run single that delivered Adam Leone (Wallingford, Conn.) and Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.).  
  • USMMA pulled a run closer in the top of the fifth when Charles Cahalan came home on a wild pitch.
  • Aidan Marshall (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) quickly gave the Mount back a two-run lead when he launched his first career home run, a solo blast, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Mount Saint Mary held the two-run advantage until USMMA scored eight times over its final two at-bats.
  • Joey Zanetti highlighted a three-run sixth inning with a run scoring single.
  • A five-run seventh saw Tyler Reistetter drive a two-run home run out to right field to close out the scoring in the game.
 
For The Knights
  • Nolasco finished the opener 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
  • Leone singled and scored a run.
  • Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) finished game one 1-for-4.
  • Marshall connected on his first career round tripper and drove in his 23rd run of the season, tying him for third on the team.
  • Mike Scotto (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) made the start and allowed two runs on six hits in 5.0 innings.
  • Michael Di Tullio (Montgomery, N.Y.) suffered the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs on three hits and three walks in 0.2 innings.
 
Game 2: USMMA 12 – Mount Saint Mary 0 (F/7)
How It Happened
  • The Mariners wasted little pulling front in game two, plating three runs in their first at-bat.
  • Zanetti led off the game with a triple and was quickly chased home on a single from Jack Millen.
  • Reistetter tripled home Millen and later scored on a sacrifice fly to close out the scoring in the first.
  • Millen drove in the team's fourth run with a sacrifice fly in the second before the Mariners plated eight runs over their final three turns at bat.
  • Travis Leatherwood highlighted a two-run fifth with a run scoring double.
  • Chambers scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make the score 7-0.
  • Danny Heck led off the seventh with a home run with Chambers adding a two-run blast with two outs in the inning to finish off the scoring in the game.
  • The Knights were held to just one hit in game two, a leadoff single to center from Nolasco.
 
For The Knights
  • In his final home game, Nolasco finished 1-for-3.
  • Cullen Roper (Stratford, Conn.) and Daniel Mack (Ramsey, N.J.) each drew a walk.
  • Michael Paolo (Milton, N.Y.) and Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) were each hit with a pitch.
  • Ryan Lockhart (Monroe Township, N.J.) suffered the loss on the mound, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings.
 
Game Notes
  • Prior to Sunday's first game the six members of the senior class: Nolasco, Roper, Joseph Laudati (Walden, N.Y.), Lukas Naley (Montrose, N.Y.), Christopher Snyder (Islip, N.Y.) and Paolo were honored on Senior Day.
