Men’s Lacrosse Topped At Maritime In Skyline Conference Championship Semifinal

Gurello totals two points, Leen makes 10 saves

Throggs Neck, N.Y. – Playing in its first game in the Skyline Conference Championship since 2018, the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team was upended by top-seeded Maritime by a score of 24-4 in the Semifinal Round Tuesday night. Nick Gurello (Selden, N.Y.) finished with two points for the Mount while Kenny Leen (Miller Place, N.Y.) made 10 saves.
 
Tuesday's loss ends the Mount Saint Mary season at 5-8 overall while Maritime wins its 12th straight game and moves to 13-5 overall. The Privateers will play for their fourth straight conference crown on Friday night against USMMA.
 
How It Happened
  • The two sides traded the first two goals of the game with Parker Reilly opening the scoring at the 9:04 mark of the first quarter for Maritime.
  • Mike Travers (Staten Island, N.Y.) came back with his 24th goal of the season, a man-up tally, with 7:41 left in the opening stanza to knot the score 1-1.
  • Following the Travers goal, Maritime ripped off eight straight goals to open a 9-1 lead on a Charles Longo tally with 5:24 left before halftime.
  • Larry Frank (Staten Island, N.Y.) stopped the Privateer scoring run with 4:27 left in the second frame, finishing off a feed from Sal Gallucci (Massapequa, N.Y.).
  • Maritime tacked on the final five goals of the first half and the next seven overall to surge in front 16-2 on a Reilly marker two minutes into the third stanza.
  • Maxwell Green Wright (Central Islip, N.Y.) potted a man-up goal with 9:03 left in the third frame, finishing off a pass from Xavier Rodriguez (Hackettstown, N.J.).
  • Maritime sustained another eight-goal run following the Green Wright marker before Gurello closed out the scoring in the game with his 11th goal of the year with seven seconds remaining in the contest.
 
For The Knights
  • Gurello finished the night with a goal and an assist, adding two groundballs.
  • Travers scored his team leading 24th goal of the season and collected two groundballs.
  • Frank potted his 15th goal of the season, collected two groundballs and caused a turnover.
  • Green Wright finished off his 19th goal of the year, secured a groundball and caused a turnover.
  • Rodriguez and Gallucci each assisted on a goal for the Knights.
  • Joseph Angelillo (Pompton Plains, N.J.) forced a team-high three turnovers and secured four groundballs.
  • Ryan Olmstead (millbrook, N.Y.) and Carmine Comitini (Staten Island, N.Y.) each forced a turnover and gathered three groundballs.
  • Leen made double-digit saves for the 10th straight game with his 10 stops and joined Angelillo with four groundballs.
 
For The Privateers
  • Connor Tomich registered nine points on the strength of four goals and five assists, adding five groundballs and a caused turnover.
  • Reilly notched four goals and two assists and also added five groundballs and a caused turnover.
  • Five other Privateers recorded two goals in the game.
  • Joseph Bruno had a stellar night in face-offs, going 26-for-27 and collected 14 groundballs.
  • Ben McGrady was one of three goalies to appear in the game for Maritime, earning the win with a single save in 37:23.

  • Maritime held a convincing 58-16 advantage in shots, including 34-8 in shots on goal.
