Women’s Lacrosse Topped At USMMA

Crooker tallies two goals

Kings Point, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team continued Skyline Conference play Saturday afternoon with a 20-4 road loss at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J) led the way offensively for the Knights, posting a season high two goals and also securing five groundballs.
 
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-9 overall and 2-4 overall in Skyline Conference play, while USMMA improves to 10-2 on the season and 6-1 in conference competition.
 
How It Happened
  • The first quarter was competitive, with USMMA tallying four goals and Mount Saint Mary scoring two goals.
  • The Knights started off the scoring with 9:06 left in the first quarter on a Shannon McGowan (Farmingdale, N.Y.)  goal assisted by Erica Schmidgall (North Massapequa, N.Y.).
  • USMMA went on to score the next four tallies of the quarter until Crooker scored her fourth goal of the season, marking the score at 4-2 going into the second frame.
  • In the second frame, USMMA pulled away from Mount Saint Mary, outscoring the Knights 8-0 in the period.
  • Coming out the half, the Mariners stayed hot, scoring three tallies in a row and pushing the score to 15-2.
  • The Knights stopped the scoring run with two goals in a row, with the first coming at the 6:03 mark in the third by Victory Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) followed up by Crooker's second goal of the game.
  • The last four goals of the game came from USMMA, marking the final score at 20-4 with the Mariners on top.
For The Knights
  • Crooker led the way offensively, scoring a season high two goals while also securing five groundballs, causing two turnovers and winning three draw controls.
  • McGowan and Ward were the only other Knights to score on the day, scoring a goal apiece.
  • Karlie Ferrucci (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) picked up four groundballs and secured three draw controls.
  • Maggie Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) scooped up two groundballs and caused a miscue.
  • Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) suffered the loss in goal on the day, pushing aside five shots.
For The Mariners
  • Jenna Turrentine led the way offensively, picking up a game high five goals and assisting on another.
  • Jaqui Sheedy scored four goals and dished out four assists, while also picking up three groundballs and causing two turnovers.  She secured a game high 14 draw controls.
  • Lauren Jablonowski was one of three Mariners to score four or more goals, picking up four tallies on the day.
  • Kaitlyn Latchaw scored two goals and assisted on three other scores.
  • Meghan Malone scored one goal, scooped up six groundballs and caused five miscues.
  • Phoebe Cho, Julia Coughlin, Gianna Russo and Karianna Eagle each contributed a goal apiece to the scoring.
  • Amber Heverly picked up the win in goal, picking up four saves.

  • Mount Saint Mary was outshot in the game 33-11 and 25-8 in shots on target.
  • The Mariners held a slim 16-15 advantage in groundballs.
  • USMMA finished with a 19-9 edge in draw controls.
