Knights Hold Off Maine Maritime Academy, 14-11

Ward totals eight points, Horan causes five turnovers

Newburgh, N.Y. – Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) totaled eight points and Karlie Ferrucci (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored five goals as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team held on for a 14-11 non-conference victory over visiting Maine Maritime Thursday evening.
 
Thursday's win evens the Mount's record at 2-2 overall, while the Mariners suffer their first loss of the season and dip to 3-1 overall.
 
How It Happened
  • The Knights got off to a good start, scoring three of the first four goals of the game.
  • Ferrucci and Ward each scored in the first three minutes of the contest before an Erica Schmidgall (North Massapequa, N.Y.) player-down goal gave the Knights a 3-1 lead with 9:01 left in the first period.
  • The Mariners answered with the next three goals, including two from Olivia Harriman, to grab a 4-3 advantage with just under three minutes left in the opening frame.
  • The Knights evened the score in the final half minute of the first stanza when Shannon McGowan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored her first career goal with 22 seconds remaining.
  • After the two teams combined for eight goals over the first 15 minutes, the Knights outscored the visitors 3-1 heading into halftime.
  • Ferrucci and Kirra Magana traded goals to open the quarter before the Knights got a Ward tally with 6:13 left and a Carolyn Del Debbio (Southington, Conn.) marker with just four seconds left before halftime to give the Knights a 7-5 advantage through 30 minutes.
  • Coming out of halftime, the Mount spread its lead to 10-5 following three straight goals over the first 10 minutes of the stanza.
  • Ward scored twice to begin the period and McGowan scored her second of the game with 5:34 left in the third quarter to give the Knights a game-high five-goal lead.
  • After a Ferrucci tally put the Mount in front 11-6 with 3:49 left in the third period, the Mariners score the final two goals of the frame, including a player-up goal from Amber Card, to pull to within 11-8 with 15 minutes left to play.
  • Hazel Stoddard brought Maine Maritime to within 11-9 with the opening goal of the fourth period and teamed up with Rebecca Caron for back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 12-11 with just over three minutes left to play.
  • Ferrucci stopped the Mariner run with her fifth goal of the game with 2:26 left and Maggie Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) added her first of the season just 18 seconds later to give the Mount the final three-goal advantage.
 
For The Knights
  • Ward closed out a big night with four goals and four assists for eight points. She rounded out the victory with two groundballs and two draw controls.
  • Ferrucci found the back of the net five times on Thursday, moving into second place on the team with nine goals. Ferrucci closed out the win with team-highs in groundballs with five and draw controls with four.
  • McGowan posted two goals and an assist for the Knights in the win.
  • Schmidgall scored once and assisted on a pair of goals.
  • Horan added a game-high five caused turnovers and three groundballs to her goal.
  • Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J.) secured four groundballs.
  • Del Debbio wrapped up the victory with three draw controls, two caused turnovers and a goal.
  • Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal, turning aside 11 shots and reaching double-figures in saves for the third time in four outings to date.
 
For The Mariners
  • Stoddard led the way for the Mariners with six points on the strength of four goals and two assists, while adding 10 draw controls and five groundballs.
  • Caron recorded a hat trick and added two groundballs.
  • Magana finished with a goal and an assist to go along with seven draw controls, five groundballs and three caused turnovers.
  • Kelsey Melton had a strong game in goal, making 10 saves in the loss.
 
Game Statistics
  • Maine Maritime finished with a 34-28 advantage in shots and a slim 24-22 edge in shots on goal.
  • Groundballs went to the Knights by a 27-21 margin.
  • The Mariners held a 17-11 edge in draw controls.
