Women’s Lacrosse Drops Road Contest At Union

Ward records assist, two draws

Schenectady, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team closed out a three-game week Sunday afternoon with an 18-2 road loss at Union. Shannon McGowan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Erica Schmidgall (North Massapequa, N.Y.) supplied the goals for the Mount.
 
Sunday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 2-3 overall on the season, while Union improves its overall record to 2-1 through three contests.
 
How It Happened
  • Union broke the game open early with nine goals in the first period, including the first five of the game.
  • Anna Smith scored three times inside the first 10 minutes of the game, including back-to-back tallies 27 seconds apart to make the score 5-0.
  • Mount Saint Mary got on the board at the 3:56 mark of the opening stanza when Schmidgall buried a feed from Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.).
  • Union closed the first period with four goals in the final 2:36 with Smith soring her fourth of the quarter with 17 seconds left to give the Dutchwomen a 9-1 lead.
  • Union scored the only five goals of the second stanza with Audrey Larson scoring twice to send Dutchwomen to the half leading 14-1.
  • Mount Saint Mary stopped a nine-goal scoring run for Union with the only goal of the third quarter, McGowan's third of the season with 1:19 left in the quarter.
  • Union responded with the only four goals of the final frame, including two more from Larson to give the Dutchwomen the final 18-2 decision.
 
For The Knights
  • Schmidgall scored her fifth goal of the season.
  • McGowan tallied for third time in her rookie campaign.
  • Ward picked up her team leading ninth assist of the season on the Schmidgall goal and led the Mount with two draw controls.
  • Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J.) and Sinead Henry (Pearl River, N.Y.) led the team with two groundballs apiece.
  • Briana Fassett (New Milford, Conn.) caused a pair of turnovers to lead the Knights.
  • Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) finished the day with 12 saves in goal.
 
For The Dutchwomen
  • Katie Julien finished with five points, scoring a goal and assisting on four others.
  • Larson and Smith each scored four goals.
  • Dana Truini scored twice and recorded two assists to go along with five draw controls.
  • Dana Nelson scored twice and led all players with seven draw controls.
  • Sydney Widlitz earned the win with a single save in 30 minutes of work.
  • Hannah Dubinsky made a pair of stops in the second half.
 
Game Statistics
  • Union held a 42-7 advantage in overall shots and a 30-5 edge in shots on goal.
  • Groundballs went to Union, 15-7.
  • Union dominated draw controls, 19-5.
  • Mount Saint Mary went 10-for-17 in clears.
  • Union finished 14-for-16 in clearing chances.
