Knights Take Down Castleton in Non-Conference Battle

Ward tallies eight points, Crooker causes seven turnovers

Newburgh, N.Y. – Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y) led the way for the Knights totaling eight points and Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J) led the way defensively with seven caused turnovers, matching the program's single game record, and picking up six ground balls. The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team was able to hold on for a 16-13 non-conference victory over the visiting Castleton Spartans.

How It Happened
  • The Knights started off hot, scoring two goals in the first five minutes of the game.
  • Karlie Ferrucci (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and Antonia Licardi (Pine Bush, N.Y) scored the first two goals of the game for the Knights, pushing the score to 2-0.
  • The Spartans responded with a goal of their own by Phoebe Loomis, before the Knights quickly responded with two more tallies.
  • Victoria Ward quickly scored her second goal of the game on an assist from Ella Garner (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). Britany Dones (Middletown, N.Y.) went on to score her first goal of the season on an assist from Carolyn Del Debbio (Southington, Conn.) to give the Knights an early 4-1 lead.
  • The Spartans answered with two goals of their own by Lacy Greenamyre and Phoebe Loomis before the Knights responded with a Victoria Ward goal on an assist from Karli Ferrucci.
  • In the second quarter, the Spartans went on to tally four straight goals to take the lead at 8-6 after back-to-back Loomis goals at 7:15 and 5:40.
  • After the Spartans extended their lead to 10-7 with 2:09 left in the second quarter on a Greenamyre goal, the Knights would respond with three quick goals by Garner, Ward and Licardi to tie the game at 10 going into halftime.
  • The Knights came out hot to start the second half, with Erica Schmidgall (North Massapequa, N.Y) scoring a quick goal at the 14:37 mark on an assist from Ward. Garner added on to the scoring with another quick goal, assisted from Ward again.
  • After giving up five straight goals, the Spartans stormed back to take the lead 13-12 with three straight goals by Kimberly McCarthy, Greenamyre and Tien Connor. Greenamyre assisted on the two of the three goals scored.
  • The Knights scored the final four  goals of the game playing a player-ip to finish the game leading by three scored.
  • Licardi scored the 13th goal of the game unassisted; Ward scored her fifth off an assist from Licardi, and Shannon McGowan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored the final two goals of the game off assists from Garner and Del Debbio.
For The Knights
  • Ward capped off the day with a huge game, scoring five goals and dishing out three assists for a total of eight points. She added to her impressive performance with three groundballs, two caused turnovers and three draw controls.
  • Licardi was the second leading scorer for the Knights, scoring three goals and tallying one assist on the day. She picked up two groundballs while also causing two turnovers.
  • Ferrucci found the back of the net twice herself, while also picking up an assist. She closed the day with two groundballs, one caused turnover and two draw controls.
  • Garner had a day herself, scoring two goals and dishing out two assists for a total of four points on the day. She picked up four groundballs, caused two turnovers and won three draw controls.
  • The last of the three Knights to score two goals was McGowan, who added a caused turnover on the day.
  • Dones and Schmidgall both picked up a goal apiece, and Schmidgall added to her day with an assist and three groundballs.
  • Del Debbio did a little bit of everything dishing out two assists, picking up three groundballs and picking up four draw controls.
  • Crooker anchored the backline for the Mount, matching the program's record for caused turnovers while leading the team with six groundballs. Crooker joins Claire Duffy with seven forced miscues in a game, with Duffy achieving the mark on March 24, 2016 against Vassar.
  • Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y) picked up the win at goal, turning aside a season-high 17 shots to give her five games with double-figure saves this year.
For The Spartans
  • Greenamyre led the way with a great performance in the loss, scoring four goals, dishing out two assists, picking up five groundballs, causing five turnovers and securing ten draw controls.
  • Loomis also turned in a strong performance, scoring four goals, picking up one assist, collecting two groundballs and securing two draw controls.
  • Kimberly McCarthy added two goals, three groundballs, three caused turnovers and six draw controls for the Spartans.
  • Tien Connor added two goals and an assist, and Megan Ward scored the other Spartans goal while also adding on an assist and two groundballs.
  • Katie Opiela suffered the loss on the day in goal, giving up 16 goals while only picking up six saves.
Game Statistics
  • Castleton finished the game with a 37-28 advantage in shots, but failed to connect on enough to pull out the win.
  • Mount Saint Mary had the advantage in groundballs, picking up 31 compared to Castleton's 27.
  • Draw controls went Castleton's way, securing 20 compared to 13 for the Knights.
  • Castleton finished 21-25 in clears and Mount Saint Mary went 25-32 in clearing chances.
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary heads to Ramapo College for a non-conference tilt Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
  • Castleton will have the week to prepare for Saturday's contest against Southern Maine, home at 12:00 p.m.
