Women’s Lacrosse Edged By Wilkes In Season Opener

Licardi totals five points in collegiate debut

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team opened the 2023 season with a hard fought 10-8 loss to visiting Wilkes Saturday afternoon. Antonia Licardi (Pine Bush, N.Y.) led the Knights with five points in her first career game.
 
Saturday's loss drops the Mount to 0-1 on the season, while Wilkes evens its overall record at 1-1.
 
How It Happened
  • The Knights got off to a quick start when Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) potted her first goal of the season at the 13:39 mark of the opening period.
  • Wilkes answered with the next two goals to open a one-goal lead, before Karli Ferrucci (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored in the final minute of the first quarter the level the score at 2-2. Licardi assisted on the tally for her first career point.
  • The Colonels answered in the closing seconds of the period when Maleah Cobham tallied with eight seconds left to give Wilkes a 3-2 lead through 15 minutes.
  • The visitors went on to outscore the Mount 3-1 in the second frame.
  • Ward opened the scoring in the period with her second of the game to get the Knights to even the score again at 3-3.
  • Cobham scored her third of the game at the 10:20 mark of the quarter to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage.
  • Brooklyn Pedana tallied back-to-back goals 39 seconds apart in the middle stages of the quarter to close out the scoring before halftime and send the Colonels into the intermission leading 6-3.
  • Wilkes finished the first half with a slim 16-13 advantage in shots.
  • Mount Saint Mary went to the break winning six of the 11 draw controls in the opening 30 minutes.
  • Mount Saint Mary scored back-to-back goals to open the third frame.
  • Ward scored her third of the game, off another feed from Licardi, ahead of an Erica Schmidgall (North Massapequa, N.Y.) goal to bring the Knights to within 6-5.
  • Wilkes got a tally from Breanne Fulling late in the quarter to give it a two-goal edge heading into the final period.
  • Ferrucci and Licardi scored consecutive goals to open the fourth and knot the score at 7-7 with 12:39 left in regulation time.
  • Wilkes responded with the next three goals, including Fulling's second of the game, to break open a 10-7 lead with 4:39 left to play.
  • Licardi got back on the board with her second of the game with 2:18 left, but the Knights would manage just one shot the rest of the way.
 
For The Knights
  • Licardi finished her collegiate debut with five points on the strength of two goals and three helpers.
  • Ward tallied three times and totaled four points to go along with two groundballs.
  • Ferrucci potted a pair of goals and joined Ward with a team-high four draw controls.
  • Schmidgall scored once and assisted on another goal to go along with two groundballs.
  • Maggie Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) led the team with four groundballs and chipped in a caused turnover and a draw control.
  • Briana Fassett (New Milford, Conn.), also making her collegiate debut, posted three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
  • Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J.) led the Knights with three caused miscues.
  • Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) was busy in goal, stopping 14 shots on the day for the Mount.
 
For Wilkes
  • Cobham led the way for Wilkes with three goals and four points, adding four groundballs and six draw controls.
  • Pedana also recorded a hat trick and collected three groundballs.
  • Fulling supported the offense with two goals.
  • Caitlin McDonough closed a strong game with a goal, four groundballs, three caused turnovers and two draws.
  • Samantha Scott earned the win in goal with eight saves.
 
Game Statistics
  • Wilkes finished the day with a 32-24 advantage in shots, including a 24-16 edge in shots on target.
  • The Colonels held a slim 28-25 edge in groundballs.
  • Draw controls went to the Knights, 12-10.
  • Mount Saint Mary went 11-for-19 in clearing chances.
  • Wilkes finished 12-for-23 in clears.
