Men’s Basketball Opens 2023 Skyline Conference Championship At Top-Seeded Farmingdale State

Knights, Rams tip-off at 7:00 p.m.

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team begins play in the 2023 Skyline Conference Championship Tuesday night with a Quarterfinal matchup on the road at top-seeded Farmingdale State. Tip-off with the Rams is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with Live Stats and Video available for those unable to attend.
 
How We Hot Here: Mount Saint Mary earned the final berth in the conference championship by virtue of a Sarah Lawrence loss on Saturday in the regular season finale. The Knights enter Tuesday's contest after posting a 6-10 record against league rivals.
 
Farmingdale State earns the top seed in the tournament after compiling an 18-7 overall record and a 13-3 mark against Skyline Conference opponents.
 
At A Glance: Mount Saint Mary finished the regular season splitting its final four decisions and posted a 9-16 overall record and a 6-10 mark in Skyline Conference play.
 
Three Knights score in double-figures entering Tuesday's contest, led by 11.9 points from Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.) who converts at 48.2-percent from the floor. Cyran is also a force on the glass for the Knights, securing 6.0 rebounds per night.
 
Elijah Barnett (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) supports the offense with 11.3 points per game, shooting a team-best 50.5-percent from the floor, to go along with just under five rebounds per game and better than one assist and one steal per outing.
 
Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) averages nearly a double-double, scoring 10.9 points per game while adding team-highs in rebounds (8.6), blocks (2.3) and steals (1.6). Figueroa's mark for rebounding is tied for the conference lead, while he leads the league in blocks per game.

Mount Saint Mary features four players who have made at least 20 three-pointers on the season, with Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) leading the way with 25. Ryan Graham (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) has knocked down 23 with Figueroa and Cyran following with 22 and 20, respectively.
 
Mount Saint Mary averages 66.8 points per game while shooting 41.8-percent overall, 27.5-percent from three-point range and 66.1-percent from the free-throw line.
 
Previewing Farmingdale State: The Rams closed out the regular season with four straight victories and seven triumphs in its last eight outings to post an 18-7 overall record and a 13-3 mark in Skyline Conference play.
 
Nick Hurowitz leads the way for the Rams in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per tilt. Hurowitz shoots 46.5-percent from the floor and enters Tuesday's contest ranked sixth in the Skyline Conference in scoring average.
 
Corey Powell is good for 12.3 points per game for the Rams and adds 4.2 rebounds and nearly two assists per contest.
 
Jevon Santos is the team's top distributor with better than four assists per game to go along with a team-high 1.9 steals to go along with just under seven points. Santos leads the conference in steals per game and ranks third in helpers per night.
 
Farmingdale State leads the Skyline Conference in scoring with 77.9 point per game and ranks fourth in scoring defense, surrendering 68.0 points to its opponents. The Rams shoot 43.1-percent overall, which ranks fourth in the conference, 30.6-percent from three-point range and a conference leading 70.5-percent from the free-throw line.
 
Previous Meeting: The Rams escaped the Kaplan Center with a 77-72 victory on January 26.
 
The Knights took a 72-70 lead on a Jayden Racca (New Fairfield, Conn.) layup with 2:09 to go, but saw the Rams scored the final seven points of the contest. A three-point play from Jovayne Walters with 33 seconds left gave Farmingdale State the lead for good in the game and the Rams went 4-for-4 from the line in the final 17 seconds to hold off the Knights.
 
Racca came off the bench to lead the Knights in scoring with 13 points, going 5-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-5 from three-point range. Figueroa finished up with 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, while Barnett and Brenden Graham (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) each tallied 11 points.
 
Hurowitz led all scorers in the game with 22 points for the Rams, adding 12 rebounds, with Macai John chipping in 14 points off the bench. Powell totaled 10 points, while Walters finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and four blocks off the bench.
 
Mount Saint Mary shot 45.9-percent from the floor in the game and hit on eight triples. Farmingdale State converted at 42.9-percent overall and outscored the Mount from the free-throw line 14-8.
 
Recent History: Including the January 26 decision, Farmingdale State has won 23 of the last 30 meetings dating back to the start of the 2006-07 season. Farmingdale State has won the last 11 matchups with the Knights' last victory coming in a 68-64 decision in Newburgh on January 10, 2015.
 
Recent Skyline Conference Championship History: The Knights will appear in the Skyline Conference Championship for the fourth time in the last five seasons the event has been held. The Knights appeared in the tournament for three straight seasons from 2018-20 and after the 2021 championship was canceled due to Covid-19, missed qualifying in 2022. The Mount has not advanced past the Opening Round of the championship since falling in the 2014 Championship Final.
 
What's Next: The winner of Tuesday's contest will advance to the Semifinal Round of Thursday and will take on the winner of the Maritime and USMMA Quarterfinal.
