Baseball Drops Season Opener At Mary Washington

Three Knights record two hits

Fredericksburg, Va. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team opened the 2023 season with a tight 5-3 loss on the road at Mary Washington Saturday afternoon. Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.) was one of three Knights with two hits in the game and added two RBI.
 
How It Happened
  • The Knights got on the board first with two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Ryan Lutinski (Easton, Conn.) started the inning with a single and was quickly chased home on a Noalsco double to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
  • Nolasco was later pushed across on a single off the bat Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.).
  • The Eagles quickly evened the score with two runs in the home half of the fourth, recording a pair of hits.
  • Ty Lowe singled home both runs following a Bobby Ayscue double that put runners on second and third with no one out.
  • Mary Washington jumped in front 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth frame, taking advantage of one hit, two walks and a hit by pitch.
  • Mike Dennis started the inning getting plunked with walks to Jonathan Sed and Ayscue loading the bases with two outs.
  • Lowe singled home two more runs with a single to right to give the Eagles the lead for good in the game.
  • Mount Saint Mary cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the sixth.
  • Nolasco started the inning with his second double of the game with Tait delivering him a batter later with a single.
  • Mary Washington closed out the scoring in the game in the bottom of the sixth when Alex Purgaso drove in Ryan Schwartz, who was hit with a pitch and stole two bases, with a sacrifice fly.
  • Mount Saint Mary was limited to just one hit over the final three innings.
 
For The Knights
  • Noalsco finished the game 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI.
  • Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot.
  • Tait wrapped up the opener 2-for-3 with two RBI.
  • Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.), Lutinski and Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) recorded the Mount's other hits.
  • Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) made his first start of the season, working 3.2 innings and surrendering two runs on three hits.
  • Liam Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on a hit in 3.0 innings.
 
For The Eagles
  • Lowe finished the contest 2-for-4 with four RBI.
  • Ayscue and Dennis each finished the game with a hit and a run scored.
  • Sed went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
  • Justin Ritz picked up the win after working 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out six.
  • Jackson Beal earned the save with 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, fanning three.
