Twohig’s Career-High Leads Mount Saint Mary Past Old Westbury

Twohig nets career-high 15 points

Newburgh, N.Y. – Charlotte Twohig (Syosset, N.Y.) poured in a career-high 15 points and Shannon Phelan (Tappan, N.Y.) scored 13 points off the bench for the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team who took to the road Wednesday night and came away with an 83-40 victory at Old Westbury.
 
Mount Saint Mary improves to 17-5 overall on the season and 14-3 in Skyline Conference play, while Old Westbury falls to 2-20 overall and 0-17 against conference opponents.
 
First Half
  • Mount Saint Mary broke the game open in the first quarter, shooting 47.1-percent in the opening 10 minutes in building a 20-7 advantage.
  • The Knights scored the first 10 points of the game and held Old Westbury off the board for the first 3:55.
  • Twohig canned a three-pointer at the 4:53 mark of the opening stanza to give the Knights a 13-2 advantage.
  • Following a Melinda Harris three-pointer for the Panthers cut their disadvantage to 15-7, the Knights got a three-pointer from Twohig and a bucket from Ciarra Quinn (Bayside, N.Y.) to take the 13-point lead into the second stanza.
  • The Knights scored the first five points of the second period on a Twohig bucket and a three-pointer from Marissa Campbell (Franklin, N.Y.) to build the advantage to 25-7.
  • The Knights' lead grew to 21 points, at 29-8, on another Twohig conversion with 7:13 left in the first half.
  • The Mount matched its largest lead of the half when a pair of Casey Love (Staten Island, N.Y.) free-throws made the lead 31-10.
  • The Panthers cut its disadvantage to 31-18 following an 8-0 run that featured three-pointers from Harris and Malaura Olivier.
  • Mount Saint Mary closed the half with buckets from Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) and Campbell in the final 42 seconds to carry a 35-18 lead into the intermission.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 43.8-percent over the opening 20 minutes and connected on three triples.
  • Old Westbury was limited to just seven field goals and shot 31.2-percent prior to halftime.
 
Second Half
  • Mount Saint Mary shot a blistering 68.4-percent in the third quarter on its way to outscoring Old Westbury 29-10.
  • The Knights opened a 41-19 lead after a 6-1 spurt to open the third quarter, capped by a fast break bucket from E. Smith.
  • A 14-0 run saw the Knights surge in front 55-21 on a Cailean Nolan (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) bucket with 4:16 left in the period.
  • The advantage ballooned to 62-25 on a Nolan free-throw with 66 seconds left in the quarter and a Campbell jumper in the closing seconds sent the Knights to the final frame leading 64-28.
  • The Mount's lead would not dip below 30 points in the fourth quarter and reached 40 points, at 74-34, on a Phelan triple with 6:41 left to play.
  • Another Phelan three-pointer with 1:24 left gave the Knights an 82-40 lead before a Quinn free-throw in the final half minute pushed the Knights in front by the final 43-point advantage.
  • The Knights converted at an efficient 55.6-percent after halftime and knocked down five three-pointers.
  • Old Westbury went 8-for-22 as a team in the second half and hit on a pair of three-point field goals.
 
For The Knights
  • Twohig led 12 different scorers and matched the game-high with her career-best 15 points. She finished 6-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-4 from three-point range to go along with a rebound, assist and steal.
  • Phelan closed the night one point shy of matching her career-high, going 5-for7 from the floor and 3-for-5 from three-point land.
  • Brianna Guglielmo (Smithtown, N.Y.) finished a solid night with eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
  • Campbell and Quinn each scored seven points with Quinn leading the team with nine rebounds and Campbell swiping four steals.
  • E. Smith totaled eight points and handed out three assists.
  • Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) joined Guglielmo with a team-high four assists.
 
For The Panthers
  • Harris led the Panthers with 15 points and eight rebounds.
  • Ja'nya Flash totaled 10 points and four caroms.
  • Olivier came off the bench to finish with seven points.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary shot an even 50.0-percent for the game, its second-best conversion rate of the season, and connected on eight three-pointers.
  • Old Westbury shot 34.1-percent overall and went 5-for-13 from long distance.
  • The Knights finished with a 28-10 advantage in points off of turnovers.
  • Fast break points went to the Mount, 14-2.
  • Mount Saint Mary dominated the paint, outscoring the Panthers inside 46-14.
