Newburgh, N.Y. – Heading into the final week of the regular season and hanging on to the final berth into the Skyline Conference Championship, the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team will play host to Maritime Tuesday night before traveling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Saturday afternoon. At A Glance: The Knights finish off the home schedule and close out a three-game home stand on Tuesday holding an 8-15 overall record and a 5-9 mark against league opponents. The Mount is coming off a 77-64 loss to Manhattanville on Saturday and open play on Tuesday with a one-game lead in the standings over Sarah Lawrence, but with the Gryphons holding the head-to-head tie breaker by virtue of a season sweep of the Knights.
The Knights feature three players who score in double-figures on the season, led by 12.1 points from
Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.) who converts at 48.7-percent from the field and has connected on 19 three-point field goals, good for third on the team. Cyran adds just over six rebounds per night to go along with better than one assist and one steal per game.
Elijah Barnett (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scores 11.5 points for the Knights on a team-best 51.1-percent shooting from the field and adds nearly five rebounds and two steals per tilt.
Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) checks in with 11.1 points per game and leads the Skyline Conference with 8.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per outing.
Ryan Graham (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) chips in nearly eight points per game and ranks second on the team with 21 three-point field goals, shooting 37.6-percent from long distance on the season.
Mount Saint Mary scores 67.5 points per game on the season while shooting 42.0-percent overall, 27.6-percent from three-point range and 65.2-percent from the free-throw line.
Previewing The Privateers: Maritime heads to the Kaplan Center on Tuesday in a three-way tie for first place in the Skyline Conference North Division and is sporting a 14-9 overall record and a 10-4 mark in league play. The Privateers have won their last five decisions, including a tight 55-51 home win over Purchase on Saturday.
Ryan Donovan leads the scoring attack with 18.0 points per game and has connected on 40 three-pointers to go along with 5.4 rebounds per game. Theo Noble contributes 11.0 points per game for Maritime while shooting 45.5-percent from the floor.
Tyler Anderson leads the team with 3.4 assists per outing and chips in nearly 11 points per night while Aleksander Begovic paces Maritime on the class with just shy of eight caroms per outing.
Maritime is scoring 67.1 points per game on the season and ranks third in the Skyline Conference in scoring defense, surrendering 66.3 points per night. Maritime shoots 40.4-percent overall as a team, 32.0-percent from three-point range and is second in the conference with a 70.5-percent conversion rate from the free-throw line.
Previous Meeting: Maritime scored a 72-69 home win over the Knights on January 7, holding off a furious second half comeback from the Mount. Mount Saint Mary trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half, before rallying to pull to within just one point in the closing seconds. Two Jovan Germain free-throws with five seconds left gave the Privateers the final three-point advantage.
Mount Saint Mary shot 45.2-percent overall in the game and went 6-for-21 from behind the arc.
Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) led the Knights with 14 points with Barnett posting a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Noble led the Privateers with 15 points with Donovan supplying 14 points, five rebounds and three steals. Maritime closed the game shooting shot 46.9-percent overall and hit on eight triples to go along with an 18-7 advantage in free-throw scoring.
Recent History: Including the January 7 decision, the two teams have each won twice in the last four meetings, with the Mount holding a 19-12 advantage in the series since the start of the 2006-07 season.
Scouting The Mariners: The Knights head to USMMA on Saturday to close out the regular season, with the Mariners holding a 12-11 overall record. USMMA used a bucket in the closing seconds to top Sarah Lawrence 77-75 on Saturday to move to 10-4 in conference play, joining Maritime and Manhattanville in a three-way tie for first place in the Skyline Conference North Division.
Drew Zalescik leads three Mariners scoring in double-figures with a team-high 13.8 points per game on an efficient 48.9-percent shooting. Bryce Bristow supports the offensive attack with 11.6 points per game and team-highs in rebounds with 7.7 and steals with 1.6.
Kody Robinson supplies 10.5 points per game and has connected on 49 three-point field goals and is shooting at 38.0-percent from behind the arc. Isaac Vencel is the team's top distributor with nearly four assists per night while chipping in better than nine points per game.
Previous Meeting: Mount Saint Mary battled its way to a 61-58 win at the Kaplan Center on January 11, stopping a three-game losing streak in the process.
The Knights were held to 36.7-percent shooting in the game and overcame 10 three-pointers from the Mariners with a 12-6 advantage in free-throw scoring to secure the victory.
Yearwood led the way for the Mount with 13 points with Cyran contributing 12 points. Figueroa tallied 10 points, secured nine rebounds and blocked three shots.
Zalescik led all scorers with 17 points, going 4-for-8 from three-point range, with Bristow totaling 14 points and five rebounds. Caleb Hutchins came off the bench to go 4-for-4 from the floor with two triples to notch 10 points.
Recent History: Including the Mount's victory on January 11, they have won four of the last five matchups with the Mariners and are 7-6 in the last 13 meetings.
What's Next: If the Knights secure a berth into the 2023 Skyline Conference Championship, they will be in action on the road on February 21.
