Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | D.J. Bevivino

Knights Pounce on the Panthers for Senior Day

Newburgh, NY- Mount Saint Mary College honored the senior members of the Men's Soccer team prior to the game's beginning.  Recognizing the years of the hard work put in by these four men and showing them their that legacy within the men's program will not be forgotten.  Jake Kwong, Nick Rescigno, Peter Ramirez, and J.C. Lopez where joined on the pitch today by their families to help celebrate their accomplishment.  The match today was a Skyline Conference contest against the #4 ranked Purchase College Panthers.

The weather, as it has all fall, chose to make presence known again, as it poured throughout the pregame and first half of the match. Only needing 3 minutes to get the game going, Marco Mazzarelli played a deep ball into the Panther defense to Nick Rescigno who took the pass well, and broke into the opponents 18 and buried his shot into the lower right corner.  The rain did not relent the whole first half, clearly affecting passes, shots and any ball bouncing on the turf.  The score remained 1-0 into the break.

In the second half, the rain went from and down pour to a heavy shower.  A free kick given up on the outside of the Knight's 18, lead to a Panther goal and the game was tied.  The Purchase College celebration only lasted 50 seconds as the Knights pressed the attack and the duo of Mazzarelli and Rescigno once again combined to put the Mount back up a goal.  The combination of the rain-soaked field and the teams fighting for the win, the pace and physicality picked up.  In the 74th minute Mazzarelli found himself unmarked roughly 35 yards from the goal, looking to put the game away, put a beautiful strike on frame, tailing away from the outstretched hands of the Panther's Keeper.  MSMC was now up 3-1

That score remained steady until the last minute when a tackle in the box resulted in a Purchase penalty kick.  The game finished 3-2 for the Mount Saint Mary's Men's Soccer team's first win of the season.

"The boys were rewards today with a quality performance.  90 minutes of intensity on both sides of the ball.  The cherry on top were they 3 class goals" remarked Coach Longacre after the match.

Next Wednesday the team will once again play at home, hosting the Mariners from the USMMA.
