Knights Run Out of Time Against Golden Eagles

Newburgh, NY - The Mount Saint Mary College (MSMC) Knights faced off tonight against conference opponent Saint Joseph's University- Long Island.  With the Skyline Conference playoffs looming, the implications of tonight's results, were on both team's minds.

The first half opened with and early goal scored by Kaitlin Hansen, assisted by Raina Quinones to put MSMC in the lead.  The Golden Eagles fought back 10 mins later with an equalizer.  It was in the 30th minute the whole dynamic of the match changed. The Golden Eagles got a breakaway, a foul was committed and the Knights found themselves playing the rest of the match with only ten players.  The subsequent freekick resulted in a goal and St. Joe's now had the lead.

Going into the half, the score was 2-1, and MSMC was playing a player down.  The pace of play and possession was heavily in the favor of the away side.  Going down a third goal in the 61st minute made the thought of a comeback insurmountable.

With everything stacked against them, the Knights dug in, and fought.  The game almost seemed like it was flipped on its head.  The Mount took control of the game.  Dominating possession and pressing the attack, even without the full 11 on the field, things began to swing the way of the home team.  It was in the 77th minute, Emma Mihale hit a beauty.  A high arcing ball over the keeper's heads and nestling down in the side netting of the goal.  The score was now 3-2 and MSMC had the momentum.  Unfortunately, a second opponent enter the game… The clock.  The end of the game came sooner than the team would have liked.  The final score 3-2.

Despite the challenging circumstances, the Knights fought hard and they are looking forward to their next match against Purchase College on Saturday at 12 PM.
