Last Minute Heartbreak Ends Match In A Draw

Newburgh, NY- Tonight's game was between the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College, and the Bears from Saint Joseph's University-Brooklyn.  Serving as the last home game of the regular season for Coach Longacre's team, the Mount came out full speed.

Only five minutes into the game Peter Ramirez, saw an opportunity to steal an early goal.  One of the Bear's defenders passed a ball back to the keeper, not seeing Ramirez attack from his blind side, Peter took the ball off the foot of the keeper and played an easy ball in putting the Mount in the lead.  Only moments later Marco Mazzarelli spied the St. Joe's keeper off his line and hit a shot from 45 yards out that clanged off the crossbar.  The half ended with a 1-0 MSMC lead.

The second half was much more of a battle.  As the physicality picked up on both sides, each team pressed the attack.  Multiple times Mount keeper Caesar Martinez had to come out of his box and shut down any type of fast break.  While the stat sheet doesn't capture his brilliance in goal, hands down Caesar, played a phenomenal game.

The only way to describe what happened in the 90th minute tonight was pure heartbreak.  15 men played in tonight's match for the home team.  Each one of those men gave everything they had, they left nothing in their tanks.  It was absolutely devastating to see a team work so hard and fight with everything that had to conceded a goal so late in the game.

While the conclusion was ultimately a draw, the ending was a hard pill to swallow.

The next match for the Knights will be on Saturday at The College at Old Westbury at 1pm.
