Knights Score Road Win At St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn

Cyran, Figueroa record double-doubles

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.) and Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) each posted a double-double and four Knights scored in double-figures as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team took to the road Tuesday night and came away with an 80-71 victory at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn.
 
Tuesday's triumph, the Mount's second straight, improves it to 7-13 overall on the season and to 4-7 in Skyline Conference play. St. Joseph's drops to 5-15 overall and 2-9 against league opponents.
 
First Half
  • After falling behind by three points twice in the early going, the Knights used a three-pointer from Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) and a bucket from Elijah Barnett (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) to grab their first lead of the night, 7-5, with 17:34 left in the first half.
  • The Bears would move in front 13-7 on back-to-back three-pointers from Evan Sirakis and Jonathan Reno.
  • The St. Joseph's lead reached 21-14 on a Joshua Gordon slam with 11:11 left in the opening half.
  • Reno canned another three-pointer at the 8:28 mark of the half to give the Bears their largest lead of the night at 28-18.
  • Mount Saint Mary would trail until an 8-0 run, highlighted by two Ryan Graham (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) triples, knotted the score at 34-34 with 3:30 left before halftime.
  • Following a Joe Sheehan basket that gave the Bears a 38-36 advantage, the Knights scored five of the final six points of the half to head to the intermission leading 41-39.
  • Figueroa connected on a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the half to give the Mount the lead for good in the game.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 45.9-percent from the floor in the first half and went 5-for-15 from three-point range.
  • St. Joseph's was held to 39.4-percent shooting, but also made five triples and outscored the Mount 8-2 from the free-throw line.
  • Cyran led the Mount with 10 first half points after going 5-for-8 from the floor.
  • Reno led all players at the break with 12 points for St. Joseph's on the strength of three triples.
 
Second Half
  • Mount Saint Mary never trailed in the second half and pushed its lead to 49-41 just under three minutes after the intermission on a three-point play from Figueroa.
  • The Mount's lead reached double-figures for the first time when a Barnett conversion gave the Mount a 54-44 advantage.
  • A three-pointer from Yearwood grew the advantage to 57-44 with just under 16 minutes left to play.
  • St. Joseph's answered with an 11-0 run, getting three-pointers from Reno, Sirakis and Chris Williams, to slice their disadvantage to 57-55 with 11:28 remaining in the second half.
  • Mount Saint Mary came back with the next eight points, started by a three-point play from R. Graham and capped by a Figueroa dunk, to push the lead back out to 65-55 with 8:58 left.
  • St. Joseph's would not be able to pull closer than six points the rest of the way and the Mount matched its largest lead of the night when a Cyran layup made the score 76-63 with 5:11 left to play.
  • A Reno jumper with 2:03 left brought the Bears to within six one final time, but three free-throws from Yearwood in the final minute gave the Knights the eventual nine-point decision.
  • Mount Saint Mary cooled to 37.8-percent shooting after halftime, but knocked down five more three-pointers.
  • St. Joseph's shot just 34.5-percent in the second half and connected on seven triples.
  • Yearwood scored 12 second half points for the Mount with Figueroa netting 10 points after the break.
  • Reno led the Bears with 13 points in the second half.
 
For The Knights
  • Figueroa scored a team-high 17 points after going 7-for-16 from the floor with two three-pointers. He closed a double-double with 11 rebounds and added two blocked shots and three steals.
  • R. Graham scored 16 points, going 3-for-6 from downtown, to go along with a pair of assists.
  • Yearwood went 4-for-8 from bonus distance on his way to 15 points. He led all players with six assists to go along with three steals.
  • Cyran poured in 14 points for the Mount and joined Figueroa with a team-high 11 rebounds. Cyran handed out two assists and swiped two steals.
  • Barnett closed a strong game with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.
 
For The Bears
  • Reno scored a game-high 25 points on the strength of a 6-for-10 effort from three-point range. He finished off the night with a pair of rebounds and a team-high five assists.
  • Sirakis chipped in 14 points, five rebounds and three assists.
  • Williams came off the bench to score 13 points.
  • Sheehan closed a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 17 rebounds while adding four blocked shots.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 41.9-percent from the floor in the game and went 10-for-29 from three-point range.
  • St. Joseph's was held to 37.1-percent shooting, but canned 12 three-pointers.
  • Mount Saint Mary dominated the paint, outscoring the Bears 40-18 inside.
  • The Knights collected 16 offensive rebounds, leading to a 17-13 edge in second chance scoring.
  • The Mount closed the night with an 18-6 advantage in points off of turnovers.

  • The Knights travel to Sarah Lawrence on Saturday for a pivotal Skyline Conference contest.
