Knights Stifle Farmingdale State

Knights connect on season-high 14 three-pointers

Newburgh, N.Y. – Behind a season-high 14 three-pointers the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team opened 2023 with a convincing 93-22 Skyline Conference win over Farmingdale State on Tuesday. Charlotte Twohig (Syosset, N.Y.) led the scoring attack with 13 points off the bench for the Mount.
 
Tuesday's victory, the Mount's third straight, pushes the Mount to 7-3 overall on the season and 4-1 in league play. Farmingdale State falls to 3-9 through 12 contests and 2-5 against conference opponents.
 
First Half
  • The Knights broke the game open early with the first 16 points of the contest over the opening 6:09 of the first frame.
  • Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) opened the scoring with a triple 23 seconds into the contest with Asia Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.), Twohig and Shannon Phelan (Tappan, N.Y.) adding three-pointers over the opening run.
  • Mount Saint Mary held the Rams off the board until the 2:43 mark of the first quarter when Isabella Greenwald converted the team's only field goal of the first half.
  • After allowing the Greenwald bucket, the Mount converted three times from the free-throw line to carry a 19-2 lead into the second period.
  • Desrats canned another three-pointer to open the second quarter scoring and push the Mount in front 22-2.
  • The lead ballooned to 38-4 on a Kate Hughes (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) bucket with 3:48 left before halftime.
  • A Cailean Nolan (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) bucket moved the Knights in front 40-5 before a three-pointer and jumper from Marissa Campbell (Franklin, N.Y.) in the final minute of the quarter sent the Knights into halftime with a commanding 45-6 lead.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot an even 40-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and connected on six three-pointers.
  • The Knights' defense held Farmingdale State to 1-for-26 shooting in the first half and an 0-for-5 mark from long distance.
  • Desrats led the scoring attack in the first half with nine points.
  • Hughes hauled in 10 boards before the break, chipping in six points.
 
Second Half
  • Mount Saint Mary was never challenged in the second half, outscoring the Rams 19-9 in the third frame and 29-7 in the final stanza.
  • A Brianna Guglielmo (Smithtown, N.Y.) lay-in at the third quarter horn built the Mount's lead to 64-15.
  • The Mount's advantage grew to 67-17 on a Phelan trey early in the fourth quarter before the Knights took a game-high 93-20 lead on a Ciarra Quinn (Bayside, N.Y.) bucket in the final half minute of the contest.
  • Mount Saint Mary converted at 42.9-percent shooting in the second half and connected on eight more three-point field goals.
  • Farmingdale State was limited to 6-for-23 shooting after the break and 0-for-4 from three-point land.
 
For The Knights
  • 13 different players found the scoring column for the Knights, led by Twohig's game-high 13 points. She finished 5-for-11 from the floor with a trio of triples, four rebounds and three steals.
  • Campbell reached double-figures for the second time in her career with 10 points, adding four caroms and three blocked shots.
  • Hughes wrapped up the night with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
  • Rivera contributed seven points, six boards and five steals.
  • Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) led all players with six assists and chipped in four points and four rebounds.
 
For The Rams
  • Tiffany Sosa led the team with seven points.
  • Lissette Cordero hauled in a team-high nine rebounds and added two blocks.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the night shooting 41.4-percent overall and hit on 14 three-pointers.
  • Farmingdale State was held to 14.3-percent shooting and went 0-for-9 from bonus distance.
  • The Knights outscored the Rams in the paint 40-12.
  • Mount Saint Mary turned 32 Farmingdale State turnovers into 37 points.
  • The Knights collected 28 offensive rebounds, leading to a 29-3 advantage in second chance scoring.

  • The Mount plays host to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Thursday in a rematch of the 2022 Skyline Conference Championship Final.
