Newburgh, N.Y. - Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) led four players in double-figures with a game-high 22 points, while
Casey Love (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Asia Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) netted career-highs as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team rolled to a 100-54 Skyline Conference win over Sarah Lawrence on Wednesday.
Wednesday's win was the first time the Mount scored 100 points in a contest since putting up 101 against Yeshiva on November 21, 2019. The victory improves Mount Saint Mary to 10-3 overall and 7-1 in league play, while Sarah Lawrence drops to 5-7 overall and 3-4 against conference rivals.
First Half
- A tightly contested first period saw the Knights jump in front 10-3 following a K. Smith lay-in with 4:08 left in the opening stanza.
- Sarah Lawrence battled back with seven of the final 10 points of the first period to cut its disadvantage to 13-10 through 10 minutes of action.
- The visitors would pull to within three points on two other occasions in the second frame before an 8-0 run from the Mount, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers from Rivera, moved the advantage to 32-21 with just over three minutes left before halftime.
- The Mount's lead got to a half-high 12 points when Rivera canned another triple to move the score to 35-23 with 2:50 left in the second frame.
- After the Gryphons pulled back to within seven late in the quarter, the Knights used buckets from Kate Hughes (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) and Shannon Phelan (Tappan, N.Y.) in the final minute of the half to carry a 39-28 lead into the intermission.
- Mount Saint Mary shot 34.0-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and hit on three triples, all from Rivera.
- Sarah Lawrence shot 43.5-percent from the floor in 24 fewer field goal attempts than the Knights and hit on five of its nine triple tries.
- K. Smith and Rivera led the way for the Mount with 13 points apiece before halftime.
- Demitra Loukopoulos paced Sarah Lawrence with 13 first half points of her own.
Second Half
- After the two teams traded buckets early in the third frame, the Knights ripped off 14 of the next 16 points to storm in front 55-32 with 6:34 left in the period.
- The advantage ballooned to 31 points twice in the quarter, including on a Charlotte Twohig (Syosset, N.Y.) conversion in the closing seconds to send the Knights to the fourth quarter leading 70-39.
- The Knights' advantage never dipped below 28 points in the fourth quarter and grew to 89-49 on a Brianna Guglielmo (Smithtown, N.Y.) bucket with 2:37 left to play.
- The Mount's lead surged to a game-high 46 points in the closing seconds when Guglielmo cleaned up an offensive rebound to give the Knights the final 100-54 decision.
- The Mount shot a blistering 63.2-percent from the floor after halftime and knocked down four three-pointers.
- The Gryphons slipped to 36.7-percent shooting after the break and went just 1-for-6 from behind the arc.
For The Knights
- Smith continued her strong play with a game-high 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting to go along with three rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.
- Rivera scored in double-figures for the third straight game, netting a new career-high with 17 points. She finished the win 7-for-11 from the floor with three triples while adding a pair of steals.
- Love reached double-figures for the first time in her career-high with 11 points.
- Guglielmo tallied 10 points for the Mount and finished with seven rebounds and two assists.
- Hughes posted team-highs with seven rebounds and four helpers.
- Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) swiped five steals.
For The Gryphons
- Loukopoulos led the way with a team-high 19 points.
- Kendall Haymore chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.
- Kaila Dorch led all players with 11 caroms and added three assists to go along with seven points.
- Colleen Coughlin totaled eight points and two assists off the bench for Sarah LAwrence.
