Mount Saint Mary Battles Past USMMA, 61-58

Trio of Knights score in double-figures


Newburgh, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team stopped a three-game losing streak on Wednesday night at the Kaplan Center with a hard fought 61-58 Skyline Conference win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) led the charge with a team-high 13 points. 

Wednesday's victory moves Mount Saint Mary to 5-10 overall on the season and to 2-4 in league play, while the Mariners slip to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in conference competition. 

First Half 
  • The first half featured runs from each team as the game swayed back-and-forth. 
  • The Mariners opened a 12-5 advantage just under seven minutes into the game on a Bryce Bristow conversion. 
  • After falling behind by seven, the Mount got a Jayden Racca (New Fairfield, Conn.) triple to pull to within 16-15. 
  • The Racca trey started an 11-0 run for the Knights that saw them push in front 23-16 on a Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) bucket with 5:53 left in the opening half. 
  • Following the Figueroa bucket it was the Mariners turn to go on a run and they ripped off a 12-1 run to surge back in front 28-24 on a Caleb Hutchins triple with 2:25 left before the break. 
  • Mount Saint Mary went on to score the final seven points of the half, getting baskets from Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.) and Yearwood to knot the score at 28-28. 
  • Following a defensive stop, Ryan Graham (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) closed out the run with a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the half to send the Knights to the intermission with a 31-28 lead. 
  • Mount Saint Mary was held to 32.4-percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes, but hit on four three-pointers and outscored the Mariners 5-0 from the free-throw line. 
  • USMMA converted at 48.0-percent overall and 40-percent from three-point range before halftime. 
  • Figueroa led the Mount with eight points at the break. 
  • USMMA received nine first half points from Drew Zalescik. 
Second Half 
  • Much like the first half, the second stanza saw each side trade runs. 
  • Bristow came out of the break and quickly tied the score with a three-pointer for the visitors. 
  • The two sides would then trade buckets until a Josh Kauffman three-pointer pushed USMMA in front 36-35. 
  • The Mariners would not trail again until a Justin Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) bucket gave the Knights a 43-42 lead with 13:29 left to play. 
  • The Mariners responded by building their lead back to 52-46 following a three-pointer from DeMarcus Spivey with 9:13 left in regulation time. 
  • Another Hutchins three-pointer saw the USMMA lead grow to 55-48. 
  • USMMA would maintain the advantage in the game until the 1:15 mark of the second half when Figueroa converted a layup to push the Mount in front 59-58. 
  • Two free-throws from Yearwood capped a 13-3 run for the Knights to push them in front by the final three-point advantage. 
  • USMMA had a look at the horn, but was unable to get the game tied. 
  • Mount Saint Mary improved to 42.3-percent shooting in the second half despite going just 1-for-8 from behind the arc. 
  • USMMA shot 40.9-percent after halftime and connected on six second half triples. 
  • Cyran and Yearwood led the way with seven second half points apiece for the Knights. 
  • USMMA got eight points from both Bristow and Zalescik. 
For The Knights 
  • Yearwood closed the victory 5-for-9 from the floor on his way to the team-high scoring total. He finished off a strong all-around game with nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. 
  • Cyran contributed 12 points and four rebounds. 
  • Figueroa narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds to go along with three blocked shots. 
  • Elijah Barnett (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) chipped in eight points and three assists. 
  • Racca rounded out the night with seven points, five rebounds and three steals. 
  • R. Graham handed out three assists and supported the offense with six points. 
For The Mariners 
  • Zalescik led all players with 17 points, connecting on four three-pointers. He added three rebounds, three assists and three steals. 
  • Bristow scored 14 points, hauled in five rebounds, handed out two assists and blocked two shots. 
  • Hutchins came off the bench to score 10 points. 
Game Statistics 
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 36.7-percent overall in the game and went 5-for-22 from three-point range. 
  • USMMA finished the night shooting 44.7-percent overall and hit on 10 three-pointers. 
  • Mount Saint Mary outscored USMMA 12-6 from the free-throw line. 
  • The Knights posted an 11-2 advantage in second chance scoring. 
  • Points in the paint went to the Knights 32-8 as did transition points 20-8. 
What's Next 
  • The Knights head to the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon. 
  • USMMA plays host to Farmingdale State on Saturday.
