Knights Begin Three-Game Road Swing At #8 Middlebury

Knights in search of first win of 2022

Newburgh, N.Y. – Following two home matches to start the season, the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team takes to the road for three straight games, starting Tuesday afternoon at #8 Middlebury. The Knights continue the road trip Friday and Saturday with a pair of games at the 2022 Blue Devil Classic hosted by Fredonia.
 
At A Glance: Mount Saint Mary is in search of its first win of the season after dropping a 2-0 decision to Lycoming in the season opener on September 1 and a 4-0 decision to local foe Vassar on Sunday.
 
Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) leads the Mount with three shots over the first two games of the season with Marco Mazzarelli (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Quinn Tynan (Schenectady, N.Y.) each recording a pair of attempts through the first two games of their respective careers.
 
In goal, Caesar Martinez (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) has played the full 90:00 in each contest and has made five saves for the Knights.
 
A Look At Middlebury: The Panthers open their 2022 season against the Knights and Tuesday and begin the year ranked #8 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll.
 
Middlebury is coming off a 2021 season that saw it produce a 13-5-3 overall record, advancing to the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament following victories over Oneonta, #4 Franklin and Marshall and John Carroll.
 
Recent History: The Knights and Panthers will meet for the fourth time on record, with Middlebury coming away with shutout victories in each of the previous three match ups. The two sides last met on September 7, 2021 in Newburgh with the Panthers scoring a 6-0 victory.
 
Scouting Fredonia: The Knights will tussle with the host Blue Devils on Friday to open the Blue Devil Classic with Fredonia entering the weekend with an 0-1-1 record.
 
Fredonia dropped a 2-1 decision to Franciscan University to open the Penn State Behrend Tournament on September 3 and posted a 2-2 draw against the College of Wooster to close out the event.
 
Dylan Ange, Jacob Gennaro and Jacob Vallas all sit atop the team leaderboard in goals with one apiece, while Markus Johansson, Chance LaCroix and Jake Murray all lead the team with one assist.
 
William Richardson has played 126:09 of a possible 180:00 through two games and holds a 2.85 goals against average while making a trio of saves.
 
Recent History: Mount Saint Mary and Fredonia have met three times prior to Friday's contest with the Knights holding a 2-1 record. The Mount has won each of the last two meetings, including a 1-0 win in double overtime in last year's Blue Devil Classic.
 
Previewing Buffalo State: The Bengals enter Friday's game against Houghton at Fredonia with a 1-0-1 recording following a season opening 3-1 win over St. John Fisher on September 1 and a 2-2 draw against St. Lawrence on Saturday.
 
Five Bengals lead the team with one goal apiece, with Manu Prieto leading the way with one goal and one assist for a team-high three points. Jamal Belraj holds the team lead in assists through two games with a pair of helpers.
 
Shae Wirt has gone the distance in goal in each game for the Bengals and holds a 1.50 goals against average and a .529 save percentage while turning aside four shots.
 
Recent History: The Knights and Bengals meet for the second straight season at Fredonia and for the fourth time since 2013 when they square-off on Saturday. The Knights hold a 2-1 record in the series, posting a 3-0 win in 2013 and a 3-2 triumph in 2014. The Bengals scored their first win of the series with a 2-0 win on September 11, 2021.
 
What's Next: Mount Saint Mary returns home to host SUNY Poly on September 14 with kick-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
