Women’s Volleyball Topped By Union, Elmira

Lema records career-high 12 kills against Elmira

Cazenovia, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team wrapped up play at the Cazenovia Invitational on Saturday with a pair of four-set losses to Union and Elmira. The Knights fell in the opener to Union by scores of 25-22, 18-25, 18-25, 19-25 before dropping the contest to Elmira by scores of 25-22, 17-25, 17-25, 15-25. Erin Lema (Centereach, N.Y.) finished the second match of the day with a career-high 12 kills.
 
Saturday's results drop Mount Saint Mary to 1-2 overall on the season.
 
Mount Saint Mary 1 – Union 3
How It Happened
  • The Mount put away 13 kills and hit .257 in the opening set against Union to grab the early 1-0 lead.
  • The Knights used a 6-0 run early in the set to grab 10-6 lead and spread its lead to 21-13 following a 7-2 stretch. Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded a pair of aces in the second spurt for the Knights.
  • Union closed its deficit to 22-20 with a 7-1 run, but the Knights held on with three of the final five points, including kills from Lema and Mary Milano (East Patchogue, N.Y.), to close out the frame.
  • Union responded with three straight set wins, recording 12 kills in each of the final three frames.
  • The Dutchwomen opened up a 20-10 lead with an 11-1 run in the second stanza and used a 7-2 closing run the third frame to grab a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • Union earned the victory in the match after limiting the Mount to just six kills in the fourth set.
  • Union scored the final six points, breaking a 19-19 tie, taking advantage of four Mount Saint Mary miscues.
 
For The Knights
  • Riddle put away 12 kills and hit .267 in the match and in the process surpassed 800 career kills. She closed out her first double-double of the season with a team-high 15 digs, adding four service aces and a block.
  • Lema and Milano each put away six kills for the Knights with Lema adding seven digs and Milano posting two aces.
  • Fran Cammarata (Camel, N.Y.) handed out 22 assists and lifted nine digs.
 
For The Dutchwomen
  • Shannon McGrath put away a match-high 16 kills and lifted 15 digs.
  • Keara Page added 12 kills and a pair of blocks.
  • Haley Kresch led the team with 21 assists and lifted six digs.
  • Kirsten Litchfield led all players with five aces in the match.
  • Georgia Pool lifted a match-high 20 digs.
 
Match Statistics
  • Union finished the match with a 49-32 advantage in kills.
  • Union held a slim 10-6 edge in service aces.
  • Blocks also went to the Dutchwomen by a 5-4 count.
 
Mount Saint Mary 1 – Elmira 3
How It Happened
  • The Knights got off to another quick start, posting 13 kills and hitting .273 in the opening stanza.
  • Trailing 16-12 in the first set, Mount Saint Mary ripped off six straight points, highlighted by a pair of kills from Lema, to surge in front 18-16.
  • After allowing Elmira to knot the score at 22-22, the Mount scored three straight points, capped by a Riddle kill, to take a one set advantage.
  • After being held to eight kills in the opening frame, the Eagles totaled 34 kills over the final three sets, including 11 with a .318 attack percentage in the fourth frame.
  • Elmira scored the final six points of the second set to even the score at 1-1.
  • The Eagles broke a 7-7 tie with a 7-2 stretch and later used a 5-1 run to grab a 19-11 advantage. The Knights would not get closer than six points the rest of the set.
  • Elmira sprinted out to a 12-4 lead in the fourth set on the strength of a 5-0 run.
  • The Knights battled back to within 15-10, but a 4-0 spurt from the Eagles pushed their lead back to 20-11.
  • Elmira closed out the match with four of the final five points to earn the victory.
 
For The Knights
  • Lema reached double-figures in kills for the first time in her career with 12 winners, hitting an efficient .391. She added six digs in the contest for the Knights.
  • Riddle reached double figures in kills for the third straight match to start the year with 11, finishing off a double-double with 11 digs.
  • Cammarata handed out 22 more assists to go along with an ace and three digs.
  • Krista Gross (East Northport, N.Y.) led the team with 12 digs.
  • Sabrina Romano (Glen Cove, N.Y.) posted a team-best two total blocks.
 
For The Eagles
  • Calli Vocke equaled the match-high with 12 kills, hitting a blistering .706 in the match.
  • Samantha Garry chipped in 10 kills while hitting .316.
  • Asia Curkendall handed out 22 assists and totaled six service aces.
  • Gianna Pezzino led all players with seven aces to go along with seven digs.
  • Amelia Martin added five aces and five digs.
  • Makenna Clark led the team with 10 digs.
 
Match Statistics
  • Elmira finished the match with a 42-35 advantage in kills, hitting .205 against .150 for the Knights.
  • Elmira dominated the service game with a 25-1 advantage in aces.
  • Blocks in the match were even at 2-2.

  • Mount Saint Mary opens play in the New Paltz Hawks Invitational on September 9 against Alfred.
