Albany, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, battling past Russell Sage by a score of 5-4.
Carly Green (Holbrook, N.Y.) and
Sadie McNair (Newburgh, N.Y.) each collected their second straight singles victories.
The Knights got off to a good start with doubles wins at both the second and third positions. The second pair of McNair and
Victoria Valencia (Floral Park, N.Y.) won for the second time together with an 8-6 triumph, moving to 2-1 on the season.
Victoria Veloz-Vicioso (Englewood, N.J.) and
Blanca Ayala Santana (Port Jervis, N.Y.) collected their first win of the season together, outlasting their opponents 8-7 (11-9).
In singles play, the top two positions picked up wins for the Knights, with Green clinching the victory with a 3-6, 7-5, 2-1 (retired) win at the top flight. The win pushes her to 2-1 on the season in singles play and 1-0 at the first position.
McNair also moved to 2-1 in singles play on the season, turning in a hard fought 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 triumph at the second slot for the Mount.
Veloz-Vicioso earned her first singles victory of the season while playing at the sixth position. She scored a 7-5 win for the Mount to support the winning effort.
Sunday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 1-2 overall on the season. The Knights close out a four-match road trip to start the season on Tuesday when they travel to Purchase College to take on Yeshiva at 6:00 p.m.
