Katelyn McCann Represents Mount Saint Mary, Skyline Conference At National SAAC Meeting

Newburgh, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College junior Women's Basketball player Katelyn McCann had the opportunity to represent both the Mount Saint Mary College Athletic Department and the Skyline Conference in April at the Division III National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Meeting in April.
 
While in attendance, Katelyn had the opportunity to take part in discussions on NCAA legislation as well as changes and issues facing Division III student-athletes.
 
"Attending the National SAAC meeting in Indiana was a great opportunity. I was surrounded by an amazing group of students who are genuinely trying to better the lives of all Division III student-athletes. I enjoyed listening to everyone's thoughts, ideas, and opinions and was grateful to hear from our guest speakers including Vice President, Louise McLeary," said McCann.
She continued, "I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to be surrounded by people who are striving to be successful. I'm excited to continue representing Mount Saint Mary College and looking forward to making an impact on all Division III student-athletes lives."
 
Other items discussed at the National Meeting include:
  • New constitution and implementing student athletes on the board of governors and management council 
  • Mental health campaign 
  • Diversity equity and inclusion campaign
  • Creating a bigger partnership with special Olympic athletes - decade duel 
  • Voted on motions concerning graduate student transfers, red shirting, 50th anniversary of Title IX, social media deregulation, recruiting rules 
  • Championships committee
  • Day of rest between games/ budget/ travel 
  • Larger bench size or potentially the full roster
  • Local ground transportation, no conference opponents in the first round, increased per diem and travel party 
  • Playing and practice seasons ( weeks-days ) 
  • Championship/ regular season budget
About Division III SAAC: The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) represents the Division III student-athlete voice in the Division III governance structure by reviewing legislation; identifying significant student-athlete issues; implementing national student-athlete based initiatives; encouraging community outreach; and enhancing Division III student-athlete involvement in and understanding of Division III in general.  The SAAC is also the committee that is primarily responsible for maintaining and coordinating the division's nationwide partnership with Special Olympics.  The committee meets in-person four times each year in January, April, July and November.  It also conducts teleconferences as needed.
