Baseball Earns Split At USMMA

Borriello wins fifth game

Kings Point, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team returned to action Sunday afternoon and split a Skyline Conference doubleheader at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) homered in a 3-2 game one loss with Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) earning his fifth win and Coleman Barnes (New Hampton, N.Y.) posting three hits in a 6-1 game two victory.
 
Sunday's split moves Mount Saint Mary to 12-16 overall on the season and 7-9 in Skyline Conference play, while USMMA improves to 20-15 overall and 11-5 in Skyline Conference play.
 
Game 1: USMMA 3 – Mount Saint Mary 2
How It Happened
  • Franco got the Mount on the board in the first inning when he connected on a leadoff home run for the early 1-0 lead.
  • The one-run advantage stood until the home half of the fifth inning when the Mariners plated two runs to move in front 2-1.
  • Jared Chambers knotted the score with a run scoring single ahead of a run scoring groundout from Travis Leatherwood.
  • Down to its last out in the seventh, Barnes laced a single up the middle that chased home Dominick Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y.) with the tying run.
  • With the game tied at 2-2, USMMA got three straight singles to open the bottom of the seventh. Chambers singled to center to chase home Tyler Reisetter with the game winning run.
 
For The Knights
  • Franco finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, stolen base, run scored and RBI.
  • Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) doubled in a 2-for-3 effort.
  • Barnes, Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.), and Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) all recorded a hit.
  • Marzigliano scored a run.
  • Mike Scotto (Putnam, N.Y.) had a strong outing in a no decision. He worked 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while fanning two.
 
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 6 – USMMA 1
How It Happened
  • The Knights scored first again in game two, plating a pair of runs in the to of the second.
  • Barnes and Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.) doubled and singled to start the frame ahead of a two-run double from Tait.
  • After the Mariners got a run back in the home half of the third, the Mount plated a single run in the fourth and three in the fifth to pull away for the victory.
  • Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) singled home Tait who led off the frame with a double.
  • Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) drove home Brust with a single to open the scoring in the big sixth.
  • Goodwin singled home DiGiovanni to give Knights a 5-1 lead with Barnes driving in Franco with a two-out single to close out the scoring in the game.
 
For The Knights
  • Goodwin finished game two 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Barnes wrapped up the victory 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI.
  • Tait doubled twice and finished 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI.
  • Nolasco, Franco and DiGiovanni each finished with a hit and a run scored.
  • Borriello moved to 5-2 on the season after working 7.0 innings and allowing one unearned run. He surrendered just five hits and struck out two.
  • Anthony Caminiti (Mahopac, N.Y.) worked 2.0 scoreless inning in relief, fanning two.
