Knights Complete Sweep Of Purchase

Bendig homers, drives in four

Newburgh, N.Y. – After having the second game of a doubleheader on April 14 postponed, the Mount Saint Mary College Softball team completed a season sweep of Purchase on Wednesday afternoon with a 12-0 victory. Samantha Bendig (Tampa, Fla.) homered and drove in four runs and Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) spun her third shutout of the season.
 
Wednesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary above the .500 mark for the first time this season at 12-11 and improves its Skyline Conference record to 9-1. Purchase dips to 10-12 overall on the season and 6-4 against league opponents.
 
How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary scored in each of its four at-bats on Wednesday, plating five runs in both the first and fourth frames and single runs in the second and third innings.
  • Mount Saint Mary strung together five hits in its first at-bat with Jenna Cedeno (Staten Island, N.Y.) ripping a two-run double to open the scoring.
  • Bendig closed out the scoring in the inning with a three-run blast, her first of the season, with one-out in the frame.
  • Mount Saint Mary expanded its lead to 6-0 in the second when Cedeno delivered Olivia Ferara (Middletown, N.Y.), who doubled to start the frame, with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Knights' advantage grew by another run in the third when Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) scampered home on a throwing error.
  • The Mount put the game away in the home half of the fourth, scoring five more times on four hits.
  • Cedeno doubled to start the inning and scored the first run of the frame on a groundout.
  • Gannon shot a single through the middle to deliver Nicole Rosner (Brewster, N.Y.) to give the Knights a 9-0 advantage.
  • Ferara later drove in a run with a walk ahead of a two-run single from Laura Dentato (Farmingdale, N.Y.) with two outs in the inning.
 
For The Knights
  • Eight different Knights finished with at least one hit in the game.
  • Cedeno wrapped up the victory 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI.
  • Gannon went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Bendig homered for the Mount, scoring once and driving in four runs.
  • Alicia Killeen (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Ferara each finished with a hit and two runs scored.
  • Rosner and Melanie McClinchey (Medford, N.Y.) both recorded a hit and scored a run for the Knights.
  • Dentato moved into a three-way tie for first on the team in RBI with 15.
  • Morris moved to 5-5 on the season after allowing just leadoff infield single in the second. She did not allow another baserunner in the game and struck out seven.

  • Mount Saint Mary looks to extend eight game winning streak on Saturday when it hosts Saint Elizabeth for a non-conference set starting at 11:00 a.m.
