Big Second Half Sends Mount Saint Mary Past Castleton

Shalvey scores five, Petrellese makes 13 saves

Castleton, Vt. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team outscored Castleton 9-2 in the second half on Wednesday evening, snapping a three-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 13-9 road win against the Spartans. Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) scored five times and Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) made 13 saves in goal for the Mount.
 
Wednesday's win, the Knights' first since an 11-9 home win over Marywood on March 18, improves the Mount to 7-4 overall on the season. Castleton suffers its fifth straight defeat and falls to 1-9 on the season.
 
How It Happened
  • Castleton scored the first two goals of the contest before Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) and Karlie Ferrucci (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 2-2.
  • The Spartans answered with a Kimberly McCarthy tally in the final minute of the first period to give Castleton a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.
  • Ferruci scored her second of the game to open the scoring in the second frame before the Spartans scored two goals just over a half-minute apart to regain a 5-3 advantage.
  • Shalvey scored her first of the game with 7:21 left before halftime, but Castleton scored twice in the final 6:53 of the second frame to carry a 7-4 lead into the intermission.
  • Mount Saint Mary put the clamps on after halftime, allowing just two third quarter goals.
  • Lacy Greenamyre scored the Spartans' final goal of the game with 1:45 left in the third stanza to give them a 9-7 lead.
  • Annie Dolan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the third frame with eight seconds left to bring the Knights to within a single tally with 15 minutes left to play.
  • Erica Schmidgall (North Massapequa, N.Y.) knotted the score at 9-9 early in the fourth frame before Shalvey scored what proved to be the game winning goal at the 11:06 mark of the final frame.
  • Dolan moved the Mount in front 11-9 with her second of the game with 10:41 left to play before Shalvey scored her fifth of the game and Kathryn McQuillan (Baldwin, N.Y.) tallied her first of the season to close out the scoring in the contest.
 
For The Knights
  • Shalvey scored five times and assisted on two goals to finish with seven points. She moved her team lead in goals to 37 and points to 47 with her scoring output.
  • Ward finished with three points on two goals and an assist.
  • Dolan and Ferrucci each scored twice with Ferrucci adding seven groundballs and four caused turnovers.
  • Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) assisted on two goals, picked up two groundballs and won five draw controls.
  • Maggie Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) closed out the win with a team-high seven draw controls to go along with three groundballs.
  • Petrellese earned her seventh win of the season in goal. She finished with a career-high 13 stops to go along with three groundballs.
 
For The Spartans
  • McCarthy scored three times and totaled four points. She led the team with seven groundballs and added four draw controls.
  • Greenamyre totaled three points and led all players with nine draw controls.
  • Raven Payne suffered the loss in goal with 13 saves.
 
Game Statistics
  • Castleton outshot Mount Saint Mary in the game 34-31, while the Knights held a 17-11 edge in attempts in the second half.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished with a slim 28-26 advantage in groundballs.
  • Draw controls in the contest were even at 13-13.
  • Mount Saint Mary went 24-for-28 in clearing chances.
