Knights Slip Past Bard In Overtime

Ward totals seven points in victory

Newburgh, N.Y. – Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) totaled seven points and Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) potted the game winner with 1:35 left in the first overtime period to send the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory over Bard Saturday afternoon.
 
Saturday's victory gives Mount Saint Mary three wins in the first four outings of the season and improves it to 3-1 overall. Bard drops back to the .500 mark at 1-1 overall on the season.
 
How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary scored three of the first four goals of the contest, including Ward's first of the day, to open a 3-1 advantage at the 4:26 mark of the first period.
  • Bard answered with the next two goals to close the first stanza to send the two teams into the second frame tied at 3-3.
  • The two sides traded goals in the second until back-to-back markers for Bard pushed the visitors in front 6-5.
  • Mount Saint Mary answered with a tally from Ward with 4:05 left in the half to knot the score 6-6.
  • Bard came back with a marker from Sarah Child to head into the intermission with a slim 7-6 advantage.
  • Coming out of the break, Mount Saint Mary evened the score at 7-7 on Ward's third of the game.
  • Bard posted the next two tallies to retake a 9-7 advantage before Ward and Ashley Giorgi (Danbury, Conn.) scored goals 35 seconds apart to bring the Mount back even at 9-9.
  • Lily Clough pushed Bard back in front 10-9 with a late goal in the third before Ward evened things yet again with a marker at the 5:50 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Bard retook an 11-10 advantage on a Rachael Yoder marker with just under five minutes left.
  • Giorgi scored with 3:13 left in regulation time to even the score at 11-11.
  • Shalvey sent the Mount to the tight one-goal victory, scoring her second of the game on the only shot of the overtime period.
 
For The Knights
  • Ward scored five times and assisted on a pair of goals to finish with seven points.
  • Shalvey picked up the game winner and finished with two goals and a pair of assists to go along with two groundballs.
  • Giorgi closed out a three-point game with two markers and a helper, adding three draw controls.
  • Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J.) anchored the backline with five groundballs and three caused turnovers.
  • Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) won a team-high five draw controls and collected three groundballs.
  • Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) recorded eight saves in goal for the Mount.

  • Child led Bard with four goals and an assist.
  • Izzi Popolizio picked up four groundballs and won a pair of draw controls.
  • Yoder won seven draw controls and posted a goal and an assist.
  • Roxanne Rouskas stopped 13 shots in goal.
