Knights Drop Skyline Opener To Farmingdale State

Shalvey totals three points, Petrellese makes 11 saves

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night, falling in its Skyline Conference opener to Farmingdale State by a score of 14-5. Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) and Ashley Giorgi (Danbury, Conn.) each scored twice and Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) made 11 saves in goal.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 6-2 overall on the season and to 0-1 in Skyline Conference play, while the Rams improve to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in league competition.
 
How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary opened an early 2-0 lead when Shalvey and Giorgi scored inside the opening nine minutes of the contest.
  • After falling behind 2-0, the Rams responded with the final goal of the first quarter and the first two markers of the second frame to open a 3-2 lead.
  • Giorgi scored for the second time in the game to knot the score at 3-3 off a feed from Erica Schmidgall (North Massapequa, N.Y.) with 8:06 left before halftime.
  • Farmingdale State got a Megan Diamond tally just over three minutes later to take a 4-3 lead and grab the advantage for good in the contest.
  • Anna Zaborowska scored twice for the Rams in the final 3:22 of the second frame to give the visitors a 6-3 lead before Carolyn Del Debbio (Plantsville, Conn.) scored with seven seconds left in the quarter to bring the Knights to within 6-4 at the intermission.
  • Farmingdale State stifled the Mount coming out of halftime, outscoring the Knights 8-1 over the final 30 minutes.
  • The Rams scored five goals in the third frame, including a goal and two assists from Diamond, to open an 11-4 lead with 15 minutes left to play.
  • Diamond and Jasmin Brown scored the first two goals of the final frame to five the visitors a 13-4 lead, before Shalvey scored her second of the game with 9:23 left in regulation.
  • Marina Zumbrunn closed out the scoring in the contest with her second of the night with 3:33 left to play.
 
For The Knights
  • Shalvey scored her 25th and 26th goals of the season and added an assist to close out a three-point night.
  • Giorgi potted a pair of goals, giving her 16 on the season, adding a groundball and a draw control.
  • Del Debbio scored her fifth goal of the campaign and chipped in a caused turnover and a draw control.
  • Kaitlyn DeLorenzo (Southington, Conn.) and Maggie Horan (Stony Point, N.Y) led the team with four groundballs apiece.
  • Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J.) caused three turnovers and collected two groundballs.
  • Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) won a team-high four draw controls and scooped two groundballs.
  • Petrellese made a career-high 11 saves in the loss and collected three groundballs.
 
For The Rams
  • Diamond, Athena Vogiatzis and Brown all scored hat tricks with Diamond finishing a seven-point night with four assists. Diamond added a game-high seven draw controls.
  • Brown assisted on two goals and finished with four draws and five groundballs.
  • Zaborowska scored twice and closed a strong night with six groundballs, two caused turnovers and four draw controls.
  • Ronnie Reilly earned the win in goal with seven saves and three groundballs.
 
Game Statistics
  • Farmingdale State outshot the Mount 31-13.
  • The Rams held the advantage in draw controls, 16-7.
