Knights Topple Gators, Run Winning Streak To Four Games

Ward totals six points in victory

Newburgh, N.Y. – Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) scored four goals and posted five points and Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) totaled six points as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team won its fourth straight game with a 14-10 non-conference victory over Sage on Wednesday evening.
 
Wednesday's victory pushes Mount Saint May to 5-1 overall on the season while the visiting Gators fall to 0-3.
 
How It Happened
  • After the two sides traded goals to open the scoring, Mount Saint Mary scored two of the final the final three markers of the first period to take a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes. Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.), Ward and Shalvey supplied the first quarter goals for the Knights.
  • Mount Saint Mary scored the first three goals of the second stanza and outscored the Gators 4-2 in the period to carry an 8-4 lead into halftime.
  • Erica Schmidgall (North Massapequa, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the second stanza with Ward providing two assists in the period for the Mount.
  • Coming out of halftime, Mount Saint Mary scored two of the first three goals of the third frame, but was outscored in the stanza 3-2 by the Gators.
  • An Ashley Giorgi (Danbury, Conn.) maker with 6:54 left in the third quarter gave the Knights a 10-5 lead before goals from Grace Hines and Lailah Espinal brought the Gators to within 10-7 heading into the final period.
  • Shalvey opened the scoring for the Knights in the final stanza before Sage sliced its disadvantage to 11-9 on a Marissa Key tally with just under nine minutes left in regulation time.
  • Mount Saint Mary answered with three straight goals with Schmidgall, Karlie Ferrucci (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and Giorgi all scoring just under four minutes apart to push the Knights in front 14-9 with 4:49 left in regulation.
  • Espinal scored her third of the game with 3:12 left to play to close out the scoring in the contest.
 
For The Knights
  • Shalvey continued the strong start to the 2022 season with four goals and an assist, moving her team lead in goals to 21 and points to 26.
  • Ward scored twice and assisted on four goals to move into the team lead with eight assists and second on the team with 17 points. Ward added three groundballs and a pair of draw controls for the Knights.
  • Giorgi scored a trio of goals and won a pair of draw controls.
  • Ferrucci finished the night with a goal and an assist to go along with a draw control.
  • Annie Dolan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored once and assisted on another goal and collected four groundballs.
  • Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J.) led the team with five groundballs.
  • Maggie Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) caused four turnovers to lead the Knights.
  • Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y) earned her fifth win in goal with four saves in the first half.
  • Mary Massaro (Watertown, Conn.) played the second half and stopped four shots for the Mount.
 
For The Gators
  • Espinal and Hines each scored three goals for the Gators.
  • Caroline Musinski assisted on a pair of goals.
  • Hines collected four groundballs.
  • Alexandra Queeney scored a goal and led all players with 11 draw controls.
  • Madeline Butta stopped five shots in goal for Sage.
 
Game Statistics
  • Sage finished with a 27-23 advantage in shots.
  • Draw controls went to the Gators 17-11.
  • Mount Saint Mary held a slim edge in groundballs, 21-20.
  • Mount Saint Mary went 16-for-23 in clearing chances.
