Clermont, Fla. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team opened the 2022 season Sunday afternoon, suffering an 8-5 loss to Western New England and a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Springfield.
Samantha Bendig (Tampa, Fla.) opened the season with three RBI against Western New England.
Mount Saint Mary opens the season at 0-2 while Western New England and Springfield improve to 2-1 and 2-0, respectively.
Western New England 8 – Mount Saint Mary 5
How It Happened
- Mount Saint Mary got on the board first in the top of the opening frame, taking advantage of a hit, error and a walk. Laura Dentato (Farmingdale, N.Y.) singled with one out in the inning and scored the game's first run on a wild pitch.
- Western New England answered with a run in the bottom of the first to tie the score, before the Knights moved back in front on a bases loaded walk from Bendig that delivered Jenna Cedeno (Staten Island, N.Y.).
- The Golden Bears moved in front 3-2 in the third before erupting for five runs in the home half of the fourth frame. Kaleigh Blades keyed the big inning with a two-run double.
- Mount Saint Mary climbed back to within 8-3 on a Nicole Palmer (Monroe, N.Y.) home run in the fifth and got two runs closer in the sixth on a two-run single from Bendig to close out the scoring in the game.
- Mount Saint Mary was outhit in the game 7-6.
For The Knights
- Dentato finished the first game of the season 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Bendig went 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBI.
- Palmer homered in two at-bats, scoring a run and driving in one.
- Riley Norwood (East Haven, Conn.) finished with a hit and a run for the Knights.
- Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) suffered the loss in her season debut in the circle, working 3.2 innings, allowing just three earned runs and striking out four.
- Christen Hansen (Cypress, Calif.) worked 2.1 scoreless innings in relief in her season debut.
Springfield 5 – Mount Saint Mary 0
How It Happened
- The Pride got all the scoring it would need in the top of the first, plating a run on a run scoring groundout off the bat of Sam Witmer.
- Springfield tacked on two more runs in the fourth and closed out the scoring in the game with two tallies in the top of the seventh.
- Lucy Puskas drove in both runs in the fourth with a double and Callie Gendron drilled a two-run home run to close out the scoring in the seventh.
- Springfield outhit Mount Saint Mary 10-3 in the contest.
For The Knights
- Bendig, Cedeno and Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) recorded the Mount's hits.
- Gannon ripped her first double of the season.
- Bendig added a walk to her base hit.
- Nicole Rosner (Brewster, N.Y.) took the loss in the circle, allowing three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings.
- Hansen made her second appearance of the day, working 3.0 innings and allowing two runs.
