Leesburg, Fla. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team returned to the diamond for its second day of games in Florida on Monday. The Knights picked up their first win of the season in a 3-2 victory over Smith before dropping a 7-6 heartbreaker to Utica to close out the day.
Alicia Killeen (Nesconset, N.Y.) drove in four runs against Utica.
Monday's results move Mount Saint Mary to 1-3 overall on the season.
Mount Saint Mary 3 – Smith 2
How It Happened
- Mount Saint Mary broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the home half of the fourth inning, taking advantage of two hits and a pair of errors.
- Jenna Cedeno (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in Jessica Ehret (Broad Channel, N.Y.) with a single to give the Mount a 1-0 lead.
- Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) who reached on an error scored the inning's second run on a second Smith miscue in the frame.
- The Knights held the two-run advantage until the sixth inning when Smith evened the score.
- Sophia DaCostsa drove in the first run on a groundout before Juno Schantz crossed with the tying run on a two-out error.
- After surrendering the lead, Mount Saint Mary moved back out on top in the home half of the sixth after Gannon reached on an error and Nicole Palmer (Monroe, N.Y.) singled.
- After the runners moved up on a wild pitch, Nicole Rosner (Brewster, N.Y.) delivered the eventual game winning run on an infield single.
- Christen Hansen (Cypress, Calif.) retired Smith in order in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
For The Knights
- Five different Knights finished the game with a hit, led by a 2-for-3 effort from Rosner who drove in a run.
- Ehret, Gannon and Riley Norwood (East Haven, Conn.) scored the runs for the Mount.
- Palmer finished the game 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
- Rosner made her first start in the circle, taking a no decision after working 4.2 shutout innings.
- Hansen picked up the win in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Utica 7 – Mount Saint Mary 6
How It Happened
- Mount Saint Mary found itself down 5-0 after one inning and 6-1 after the second frame.
- Mount Saint Mary got a run back in the top of the second when Killeen delivered Olivia Ferara (Middletown, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly.
- Abbigayle Finch gave Utica back a five-run lead in the bottom of the second with a one-out run scoring single.
- Mount Saint Mary scratched back to even the score at 6-6, plating a run in the fourth and four in the sixth.
- Killeen drove home Ferara in the fourth with a two-out single to cut the Knights' deficit to 6-2.
- Mount Saint Mary strung together five hits in the big sixth with Killeen driving in her third and fourth runs of the game with a one-out triple.
- Norwood singled home Killeen to bring the Mount to within 6-5 before Samantha Bendig (Tampa, Fla.) drove in Norwood with a two-out single to tie the score at 6-6.
- Mount Saint Mary put the go-ahead run on base in the seventh, but could not advance the runner into scoring position.
- With the score tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Utica got three singles, including back-to-back safeties with two outs to sneak out the victory.
- Lauren Paul singled Finch into scoring position with two outs before Emily Joss drove in the game winning run with a single to left center field.
For The Knights
- Four different Knights finished the game with two hits, including Killeen who went 2-for-3 with a triple, run scored and four RBI.
- Bendig went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Ferara finished up 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
- Norwood put together a 2-for-3 effort with a run and an RBI.
- Rosner finished with a hit and run scored.
- Hansen worked the final 6.0 innings of the contest and suffered the loss, allowing two runs and striking out two.
What Next
- Following a day off on Tuesday, the Knights will return to action with games against William Paterson and McDaniel.
