Knights Take Two From CCNY

Franco, Lutinski drive in two in opener

Fishkill, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team scored a doubleheader sweep over CCNY Friday, taking game one 9-4 before taking the set with a 3-2 game two victory. Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Ryan Lutinski (Easton, Conn.) sparked the game one victory with two RBI apiece.
 
Friday's sweep moves Mount Saint Mary to 3-5 overall on the season while CCNY falls to 2-7 in 2022.
 
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 9 – CCNY 4
How It Happened
  • The Knights fell behind 4-0 after a half inning, but rallied to tie the score in the bottom half of the first frame.
  • Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) tripled home Franco to get the Knights on the board ahead of a run scoring single from Dominick Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly from Coleman Barnes (New Hampton, N.Y.).
  • Mount Saint Mary got even in the first when Lutinski delivered Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.) with the team's second sacrifice fly of the frame.
  • The Knights pulled in front in the second when Franco scampered home on a wild pitch.
  • The Mount tacked on three more runs in the home half of the third to pull in front 8-4, keyed by a run scoring double from Lutinski and an RBI single off the bat of Franco.
  • Mount Saint Mary closed out the scoring in the game in the sixth when Franco scored on a throwing error.
 
For The Knights
  • Franco finished the opener 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, scoring three times and driving in two others.
  • Marzigliano recorded a pair of hits, scoring a run and driving in one.
  • Lutinski finished 1-for-1 with a double, walk, run and two RBI.
  • Merlin, Nolasco and Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) each finished with a hit and a run with Merlin adding an RBI.
  • Liam Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) picked up his first career win in relief, working 3.0 scoreless innings and striking out four.
 
For The Beavers
  • John Creegan closed the opener 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Tyler DiBlasi finished with a hit, run and two RBI.
  • Michael Chasanov doubled, scored a run and drove in one.
  • Richard Vento suffered the loss, allowing four runs in 2.1 innings while fanning five.
 
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 3 – CCNY 2
How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary allowed an unearned run in the top of the third and trailed 1-0 until plating three runs in the home half of the sixth.
  • Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) worked a two-out walk in the sixth to start the late rally and later scored the tying run on a CCNY miscue.
  • Luke Barone (Monroe, N.Y.) pushed the Knights in front when he scored on a wild pitch before Adam Leone (Wallingford, Conn.) crossed with the eventual tying run on another CCNY fielding mistake.
  • The Beavers recorded two hits in the their final at-bat and scored a run on a passed ball, but could not pull even.
 
For The Knights
  • The Knights were held to three hits in game two with Marzigliano, Cullen Roper (Stratford, Conn.) and Ben Crowley (Highland Mills, N.Y.) all singling.
  • Tait, Barone and Leone scored the runs.
  • Tait, Leone and Roper all finished with a stolen base.
  • Matthew Boriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) earned the win on the mound with six strong innings of work, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out eight.
  • Brian Gregory (Florida, N.Y.) picked up his first career save in the win.
 
For The Beavers
  • Victor Murra Schott, Jonathan Rivera and Sardar Kahnbilvardi all posted two hits.
  • Creegan and Rivera scored the two CCNY runs.
  • James Dean Johnstone took a no-decision, working four shutout innings with three strikeouts.
  • Josue Rodriguez suffered the loss, allowing three unearned runs in 2.0 innings.
 
What's Next
  • The Knights are off until March 23 when they play host to Baruch.
  • CCNY travels to Maritime Saturday afternoon.
