Women’s Lacrosse Outlasts Wilkes In 2022 Season Opener

Shalvey totals five points, Petrellese makes 10 saves

Edwardsville, Pa. – Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) recorded five points and Liz Pettrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) made 10 saves in her collegiate debut as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team held on for a 12-11 road win at Wilkes to begin the 2022 season.
 
Saturday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 1-0 while Wilkes drops to 0-1 through the season's first weekend.
 
How It Happened
  • After surrendering the first goal of the game, Mount Saint Mary ripped off three straight goals, including two from Shalvey, to open a 3-1 advantage.
  • Wilkes cut its deficit to 3-2 before the Mount scored two straight to end the first quarter and open a 5-2 advantage. Carolyn Del Debbio (Plantsville, Conn.) scored with the extra attacker and Annie Dolan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) potted a goal while the Knights were a player down to build the 5-1 lead.
  • Mount Saint Mary moved in front 6-2 on Karli Ferruci (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) tally to open the second period.
  • Wilkes used a three-goal run and a 4-1 stretch to end the first half to climb to within 7-6 at the intermission. Savannah Bauman scored twice over the final 7:08 of the second for Wilkes with Ashley Giorgi (Danbury, Conn.) breaking up the run for the Knights.
  • The Knights came out of the intermission and scored the first four goals of the third and outscored Wilkes 5-1 in the frame. Giorgi scored two goals over the quarter for the Knights, including the team's final tally of the game wit just under two minutes left in the frame.
  • Leading 12-7 after the third, Mount Saint Mary was outscored 4-0 in the final stanza.
  • Bauman scored with 10:33 left in regulation to open the scoring in the fourth with Sam Mullen pulling Wilkes to within 12-9 at the 5:38 mark.
  • Camryn Devitt scored back-to-back goals just seven seconds part with just over two minutes left to being Wilkes to within a single shot.
  • Mount Saint Mary won the ensuing draw control and did not let Wilkes register an attempt, closing on the one goal victory.
 
For The Knights
  • Shalvey opened the season with three goals and two assists to go along with a groundball and two draw controls.
  • Ferrucci finished her collegiate debut with three goals, two caused turnovers, four draw controls and six groundballs.
  • Giorgi was the third Knight to register a hat trick.
  • Erica Smhmigdall (North Massapequa, N.Y.) finished off her Mount Saint Mary debut with three assists.
  • Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Maggie Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) each finished with four draw controls.
  • Petrellese stopped 10 shots in the victory and collected one groundball.
 
For The Colonels
  • Devitt led all players with five goals, adding three groundballs and three draw controls.
  • Bauman scored four times and picked up a groundball.
  • Domencia Lerch paced the Colonels with five groundballs and seven draw controls.
  • Courtney Mallon suffered the loss in goal with four saves.
 
Game Statistics
  • Wilkes outshot the Mount 32-21, including 21-18 in shots on goal.
  • Wilkes finished with a 22-19 edge in groundballs.
  • Mount Saint Mary won 14 of the 26 draw controls contested.
  • The Knights finished 15-for-26 in clearing chances.
