Knights Drop Home Opener To Dominican

Shalvey scores twice

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team opened the home schedule on Sunday afternoon with a 17-2 defeat at the hands of Division II Dominican. Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) scored both goals for the Knights.
 
Sunday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 1-1 overall on the season while Dominican opens its 2022 season at 1-0.
 
How It Happened
  • The Chargers scored eight times in the opening stanza, including two goals each from Grace DeStasio and Sarah Smith.
  • Dominican pushed its scoring run to open the game to 12 with the first four tallies of the second period with Caitlin Costello scoring at the 8:20 mark of the quarter to close the Chargers' scoring in the first half.
  • Shalvey got the Mount on the board with 90 seconds left before halftime with her first marker of the game.
  • Shalvey gave the Mount back-to-back goals when she opened the scoring in the third quarter at the 12:39 mark to bring the Knights to within 12-2.
  • Dominican answered with the final five markers, including the only three goals in the final frame. Josie Lettieri potted a pair of goals for the Chargers after halftime.
 
For The Knights
  • Shalvey scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season on Sunday, moving her team lead in points to seven.
  • Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J.) led the Mount with two groundballs.
  • Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) won a pair of draw controls for the Knights.
  • Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) made seven saves for the Mount in goal in just under 18 minutes of action.
  • Mary Massaro (Watertown, Conn.) came on to make a single save for the Knights.
 
For The Chargers
  • Dominican featured seven different players with at least two goals, led by three markers each from DeStasio and Lettieri.
  • Costello assisted on a pair of goals and joined DeStasio with four points in the game.
  • Costello led the team with three groundballs and caused a turnover.
  • DeStasio and Sydney Strohmary each won four draw controls for the visitors.
  • Three different goalies saw action in the game with Rebecca Nutting making a pair of saves.

  • Dominican held the edge in overall shots 31-7 and shots on goal 25-6.
