Knights Falter At Home Against Sarah Lawrence

Yearwood scores game-high 18 points for MSMC

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team dropped their third consecutive game Wednesday night, falling at home against league rival Sarah Lawrence 73-61. Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) scored a season-high and game-high 18 points in the loss.  

Wednesday's loss drops the Knights to 2-7 overall and 0-2 against conference opponents on the season. The Gryphons, meanwhile, improve to 2-7 overall and notch their first conference win to move to 1-0. 

First Half 

  • The Knights came out hot over the first four minutes, taking a 9-5 lead on an Elijah Barnett (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) jumper. 
  • The two sides traded leads over the next five minutes before Sarah Lawrence took control. 
  • The Gryphons took a 24-15 advantage after back-to-back triples from Chris Dougherty and Chris Torres at the 9:09 mark in the half. 
  • The Knights went on a 6-0 run before intermission, cutting a 29-19 deficit to 29-25, capped off with a Ryan Graham (Goshen, N.Y.) jumper with 23 seconds remaining. 
  • The Mount shot 37.5-percent in the opening half, but went just 1-for-10 from deep, while Sarah Lawrence shot 33.3-percent from the field and 35.3-percent from three. 
  • Yearwood scored nine points on 4-of-4 shooting in the first half. 
  • Justin DeFabio and Eamon Kelly scored six points apiece to lead the Gryphons. 

Second Half 

  • The Gryphons opened the second half scoring the first six points to take a 35-25 lead on a triple from Braden Burman and an and-one from Lucas Murray. 
  • The Knights cut the Gryphons' lead to 40-35 at the 14:50 mark on a Ryan Graham (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) layup. 
  • The two teams traded buckets for much of the next seven minutes before Sarah Lawrence began to pull away once again.  
  • Back-to-back triples by DeFabio at the 4:08 mark pushed the Gryphons' margin to 68-51. 
  • R. Graham scored the next seven points for the Knights before Barnett sunk a layup at the 1:41 mark to shrink the deficit to 68-60. 
  • A pair of Sarah Lawrence free throws by Torres with 38 seconds left iced the game as they took a 72-61 edge. 
  • The Mount got hot in the second half as they improved to shooting 55.6-percent from the field, but just 1-for-5 from deep. Sarah Lawrence also got hot, shooting 15-for-28 from the field and 7-for-17 from three. 
  • Barnett poured in 12 second half points while Yearwood scored another nine. 
  • Chris Dougherty scored 10 points for the Gryphons. 

For The Knights 

  • Yearwood notched a season-high 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field, while draining his only triple attempt. He added two boards, an assist, and a steal. 
  • Barnett poured in 16 points on 8-for-14 shooting, while also ripping down six rebounds and distributing three assists. 
  • R. Graham also scored a season-high 13 points while recording two steals. 
  • Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and chipped in three steals and two blocks. 

For The Gryphons 

  • Dougherty scored a team-high 15 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting, along with 2-for-2 shooting from deep. He also recorded eight rebounds. 
  • Torres and DiFabio each contributed 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting. 
  • Murray chipped in seven points and seven rebounds for Sarah Lawrence. 

Game Statistics 

  • The Knights shot 45.8-percent from the field but only 2-for-15 from three. 
  • The Gryphons shot 43.6-percent from the field and 13-for-34 from beyond the arc. 
  • The Knights scored 30 points in the paint, compared to 18 for the Gryphons. 
  • Sarah Lawrence had ten second chance points while the Mount had just six. 

What's Next 

  • Mount Saint Mary will face-off on the road with Purchase on Saturday at 12 p.m. 
  • Sarah Lawrence will host Maritime on Saturday.
